What Makes You Happier, Money or Respect?

Was it Lil' Kim who rapped the lyrics "Money power respect... It's the key to life"? Turns out, she was only partly right. New research suggests happiness has a lot more to do with respect than it does with money, Medical News Today reports.

In a series of studies, psychological scientist Cameron Anderson of the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, found that:

1) Respect and admiration, but not socioeconomic status, predicted students' social well-being. 2) The relationship between respect/admiration and well-being was partly due to the sense of power and social acceptance that the students felt in their personal relationships. And 3) Changes in respect/admiration corresponded to changes in MBA students' well-being. And respect/admiration predicted well-being more strongly than socioeconomic status.

"I was surprised at how fluid these effects were -- if someone's [social] standing in their local ladder went up or down, so did their happiness, even over the course of 9 months," said Anderson. What makes you happier: money or respect?

Im a loner. People always had bad opinions of me and talked about me.

some people like it when you are poor and pathetic like them, but when you get some money they all hate.

thats what stop some people from being successful. because of what other people think.

    let them hate. they can

    kiss my ass

Money is in itself is meaning less, respect has to be earned, and can not be bought.

Money, because respect is an opinion of someone else and their judgements about you. Money I think can get you alot of happiness, where if someone or everyone already doesn't have respect for you, then why waste feeling respect is better than money when u already don't have any?
  • uninfor... CircusF... 2012/06/24 23:51:55
I didn't answer this question as it didn't have a none of the above option. You are young and in a few years you will find out what money is really worth. The answer is nothing.
  • lm1b2 CircusF... 2012/06/24 23:58:20
Evidently you don't understand the concept of respect,if people do not respect you,you have nothing.
  • addie lm1b2 2012/06/25 00:53:54
That is a pathetic statement. Self respect is one thing, but you cannot control, or live and die, by what people have in their heads about you. Or can YOU? lol

Is a sad affair, that money can actually buy respect. When you have nothing, people assume that this translates into being without worth. People do not look up to the poor, nor do they respect them. Actually, they would prefer the poor stay out of sight. That way, they are not reminded that the poor exist. Sad, sad affair is isn't it? I personally have very little in revenue. However, in respect, I am a very wealthy man indeed. I have been told that I have respect, simply (and inexpensively) because I give respect in return...Just a thought...

You may think you have respect because you have money, but thats not true, they pretend to respect you because of your wealth.
  • sundance lm1b2 2012/06/25 02:10:13
Besides being the truth, isnt that the point?....Just a thought...

Respect is power and influence. I feed on the admiration of lesser beings, cash is not nearly as valuable as a subordinate in high places, which is key to my world domination plan.

Respect is not something a person can buy...it is how you present yourself..whether you are a pauper or king..I have known some wealthy people but do not respect them because they are arrogant and so full of themselves!
  • KATLYN 2012/06/24 21:50:35

You could have SO much money but be spat on as you walked down the street because you earned it by robbing hard-working people of there few riches-You could have NOT a LOT of money and earn some while you work hard and get respected
  • ☆ElenaDiamond☆ 2012/06/24 20:58:50

Money will fade away. But when one looses respect then the other individual has to earn it.
  • Dezpanther 2012/06/24 20:24:17
With money, i can just buy respect!!

Big wads of many make me tingle.

    wads tingle
  • KnightO... John Mirra 2012/06/24 20:33:53
A wad of money can make you tingle, but its wiser to spend it so it can keep coming back to you otherwise its foolish to just spend and accumulate material things so someone else can receive them when one discards from the earth.

Just because I say I like wads of money does not automatically mean I am a God forsaken fool. Anyone can take out their credit cards and over charge that too. They often do.

Thanks for trying to re-educate the lowly masses of people of planet earth. Maybe you have some Holy calling. :-()

Unforunately, there are those who believe money equals respect. It only creates envy.
  • Herbtheman 2012/06/24 19:41:52
with the money I could buy the respect.
  • teckila 2012/06/24 19:30:38
Money has never made somebody happy! It is an illusion!
  • lm1b2 teckila 2012/06/25 00:05:58
Theres nothing wrong with having money, you can still be respected, and have money, maybe its what you do with that money that earns you that respect.
  • Arisu teckila 2012/06/25 05:34:50

This question does need a third none of the above. If I did something to get money that made people think poorly of me, I probably wouldn't do it. (here looking at you wall street). But if I was respect neutral, I'd rather have money. I don't need to fondness of others, I actually prefer indifference.
  • Veritas 2012/06/24 18:44:17
Respect and "atta girl" don't pay the rent. I am respected; however the two are intrinsically tied together.
  • METALheadMom 2012/06/24 18:26:52
Can't get respect when people don't even know what it is.
  • dwight 2012/06/24 18:07:13
