What Makes You Happier, Money or Respect?

Was it Lil' Kim who rapped the lyrics "Money power respect... It's the key to life"? Turns out, she was only partly right. New research suggests happiness has a lot more to do with respect than it does with money, Medical News Today reports.

money

In a series of studies, psychological scientist Cameron Anderson of the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, found that:

1) Respect and admiration, but not socioeconomic status, predicted students' social well-being. 2) The relationship between respect/admiration and well-being was partly due to the sense of power and social acceptance that the students felt in their personal relationships. And 3) Changes in respect/admiration corresponded to changes in MBA students' well-being. And respect/admiration predicted well-being more strongly than socioeconomic status.

"I was surprised at how fluid these effects were -- if someone's [social] standing in their local ladder went up or down, so did their happiness, even over the course of 9 months," said Anderson. What makes you happier: money or respect?

Im a loner. People always had bad opinions of me and talked about me.

some people like it when you are poor and pathetic like them, but when you get some money they all hate.

thats what stop some people from being successful. because of what other people think.

    let them hate. they can

    kiss my ass

I got both, but I couldnt live if I didnt respect myself and have enough to feed myself.

Respect for other people is more important than being respected, Im saying that to all you who think the only way to gain respect is by taking it from someone else.

I cant see how your life can be fulfilling, maybe you have found your own way, but I cannot imagine any way.
If I was the last person this planet I could find joy, but that would be because I am able to explore our vast planet whatever way I choose to.
If I was confined to one area, my life would be misery. I have been confined before and I would wish it upon no one.

heh, well i'm confined by choice. i used to do all that exploring stuff, no i find there's just as much interesting stuff on the internet, and it requires much less exertion.

The internet to me is still a screen, when holograms are a household thing (they are about to become quite common, not the most complicated device) I will have more interest in exploring our virtual world.
I have a passion for video games (I would like to design my own line of games soon), they can be made to teach people things they simply cannot learn from real life experiences. I believe that a certain amount of confinement is essential for a growing mind (sorry to contradict what I said earlier), it is just as important as adversity is in making a real man.
However with the wrong amount, you can turn that person into a bully, a loner or something that humans judge as unhealthy.

I do not judge you, I am aware that people can explore the most unusual ways of life, some homeless, some junkies, but we can never know if that person was good or evil, that is for them to decide.

Can I ask, when you are feeling down, how do you handle it without someone to support you?

I don't know how i would handle it, but i've never felt down, depressed, stressed etc. I've been sadenned by things, (Death of pets or relatives, disappointing ending to Mass Effect 3, internet connection going down (not to say that those all produce equal responses).) but it's always been reactionary, and never long term. The feelings go away on their own in a matter of minutes or hours.
If i needed to talk to someone i still have close friends i talk to over Skype, or Xbox Live.

Mass Effect 3 and Gears of War 3, what bad ways to end something that started off so promising, Bioware are talking about changing the ending of mass Effect 3 though.

If you can control yourself without help that is good, you are better than most people (who hold on to problems forever, and constantly distract themselves with stupidity).

Haha, very good, you mean to say can buy things for yourself that might make you feel like someone who is worth respect. In a class like you mentioned, they would teach you that respect is something you must have for yourself before anyone else can have it for you, I can teach someone about respect if they needed me to.

I know how to make anyone respect me, and when I find they are not worth respecting, I know how to make them fear me.
In fear there is respect, not the right kind of respect, but I would still be respected unless everyone feared me.

To each their own I find that you can earn respect with just the right attitude..but you need sometimes more than that to earn money

now I think the comparison is unfair to begin with we're comparing something physical (money) with something moral (respect) it's like saying would you rater have food or be in love....it doesn't make sense!
  • Eyes Se... BerryColor 2012/06/23 18:33:21

    Very true and very perceptive.

The most universal way of finding respect, is finding something to share with another person, this could be something as simple as a similar experience you both had, or something as great as giving a starving man your meal.

I reach out to every person, my whole life I have never followed "social barriers" society and media have urged us to follow, it wasnt until I 12 that I understood this in me. I believe it has made my life much richer.

Let us compare respect with love, and money with company.

Nope, where I live, we hate people who grow up rich, we love people who make themselves rich, like me :)

Self made-millionaire, I wont let my kids grow up rich, they are going to have to learn what it is to be poor before they can make money.

That last part about money? That is not true, if we took money away from our modern world, but before money was present on this planet, respect was, look at the pyramids.
Cant imagine the kind of respect and fear someone would have for the guy who had that built in a time when no other building went higher than 2 or 3 stories.
