Most of us do our best to follow the rules when we're on the road, but life happens. Maybe you were running late to a meeting, risked going a few miles per hour over the speed limit, and got caught; maybe you didn't realize there was a "No Right on Red" sign and went for it, even though you know there was a police car right behind you. Even talking on your phone can get you in trouble in most states.

I don't get very many tickets. I literally had to go back to the beginning of my driving history.
Once in fact, when I answered a questionnaire for a residency appointment in a VA Hospital, I struck this question: "Have you ever been convicted of a misdemeanor that carries a fine more than fifty dollars?" (This was in 1986.) I had to say yes--because speeding in West University Place, Texas, carried a fine of eighty dollars at the time. So I wrote that up. The secretary to the Pathology department, when she finally met me, said, "Ah, so YOU'RE the one who was so scrupulously honest about misdemeanors carrying fines more than fifty dollars. We weren't interested in speeding tickets...!"
