I dunno why so many ppl are so negative about resolutions now...I find them important and quite exciting.
I think people are really capable of improving themselves for the better, so long as they are serious about it and actually take action to achieve the change. We all tend to get lazy throughout the year, but the thought of the start of a new year gives us that little, and often much-needed boost to push ourselves to try to improve who we are.
Goals are really what motivates us in life. The problem is, people set unrealistic goals, and don't seriously consider their limitations/abilites, and the result is that they don't achieve their goals and then they plant themselves with the false idea that "they can't change".
So set realistic goals ppls! :)
(oh, and I really feel what you said about "the power of this awareness", Mark! I really like reading your blog entries because you're so good at putting these feelings into words! I can never convey my thoughts into words so accurately and eloquently.. boohoo)
People make goals that are too lofty. You should set your sights on an obtainable goal and commit to it. Or just screw it, promise yourself the world and payoff nothing.
They haven't developed the emtional fortitude to follow through
They feel good about it, and then forget about it
