A bad word is just a word - the users decide how it makes them feel, and what it refers to. For example:
- In French, 'retard' means 'delay' or 'slow down.'
- A certain word (which I won't use so as not to make people cringe) is a slang-word for 'semen' in English, but in Latin, it simply means 'with' and has no sexual connotations attached.
Notice that both the words 'retard' and '[expletive]' were regular words until English speakers turned them into cuss words for the English language.
It seems to be a word that had made it to the not politically correct stage. Mentally challenged has probably taken its place. Too often the word was used in a negative context about people who were not born with an affliction.
Disreespectfull!! If someone has a mentel illness,it doesn't give you the right to call them that:) The correct term is mentally ill:) Retarted is a slang sweetie:)
Why would you find it offensive? I'm curious. Are we so sensitive that if we say something that doesn't sound super special then we shouldn't say anything at all? Are you still of the belief that every child must always win so that they won'y have their feelings hurt?
Oh my gosh how insensitive. A child who is born with special needs should be respected in every way. Years back the word retarded was acceptable. Today it is not. We all must change with the time. Today the correct term is "special needs." I think what made the word retarded unacceptable was when young people used it in a derogatory way by saying "You're nothing but a retard" or "What are you retarded?" Do yo see what I'm saying?
It's funny, I just had a clerk (a grown woman) say retarded yesterday when I was checking out. She said "this computer's being retarded". I didn't think "how inappropriate", didn't honestly care that she said it but it did surprised me a bit. It's definitely one of those words that's taken on multiple meanings. Like "gay". A great, I guess there'll be another ridiculous PSA soon!
I think it's a stupid word that shouldn't be said unless it's used in the right terms! Like saying that your work is "retarded" that is just stupidity, I don't think some ones work would have have disability!
Nor appropriate label. It is hard for older people to change their language, though, so be patient with them even though they are not politically correct.

Retards aren't offended by it.
