Not being excommunicated in Second Grade.
In our Roman Catholic parochial school, I'd gotten the impression that displeasing the nuns was the precise equivalent of so offending God Himself that He would cast me forever from the community of the Church Militant, leaving me damned for all eternity.
Jeez, talk about being "raised Catholic."
One Friday I'd screwed up a homework assignment, ruining the single piece of coarse, cheap yellow writing paper I'd been issued. I'd erased my mistakes so freakin' many times that I'd worn a hole in the thing. Irreparable! Unspeakable! I was doomed.
I spent the entire weekend convinced that Monday would see me cast from school, from the Church, and from my family. I contemplated suicide - at the age of six - and wondered how much it was going to hurt.
And then on Monday the nun handed me another piece of that crappy yellow paper, told me to do the assignment over, and that was that.
Boy, did I breathe a sigh of relief.
Sure as hell put off any thoughts of a vocation in the priesthood, though, didn't it?
What is your favorite childhood memory ?
