What is up with all the public breastfeeding lately?

Look, I am all for breastfeeding. Breastfeed until your baby is old enough to stop. Breastfeed up till two if you want. The WHO recommends it even. I am not one to judge when you should stop. But putting it on TV and scheduling photo shoots for it is not only annoying, but disruptive to your childs feeding schedule.

I nursed two children. I found a way to do it in private and be covered up. There is no reason to let the breasts run rampant. (LOL). If there was no way to do it discreetly in the location where I was, I politely excused myself and my child and found somewhere where I could do it peacefully. Children don't like disruptions in schedule anyway, and I tried to plan my dinners out accordingly or pump and carry to make public situations more comfortable.

So whats up with the Public Display of Boobage?

I don't have an issue with people breastfeeding their child, it is natural and normal, but if your child needs to be fed, cover your boob, because no one needs to see it. A mother feeding her child while chilling on the edge of the pool is not the issue...but if her boob is hanging out for the world to see, that is the issue.

Now, I have never breast fed my children, the first because he refused to latch, and the second because it was far easier to juggle in my life at the time. But I still cannot help but stare when a woman whips it out, no matter the reason. A small blanket or a spare shirt is all it takes.

it is wonderful. I nursed both my sons, but not in public. I'm a private person, but so long as the ladies are covered, I support it. However, in my opinion, certain public places are out of line, such as at a restaurant, while people are eating, or anywhere where those who are uncomfortable cannot have the choice to move away.

I breastfed my daughter 33 years ago when it wasn't 'popular.' But, I respected the sensitivities of others and did so discreetly when in public, sometimes even returning to the car to feed her. I agree with you, Elena!

Maybe people are tired of this completely non-sexual act being treated as if they are having an orgy in public. Nursing a baby has zip, zero, zilch to do with sex. Americans are way too obsessed with breasts as sexual objects. Breasts are not "fun bags." They are there to do a job--nursing a baby. Anything else is just a side benefit, so to speak.

It's gotten a bit out of control. Sure the kid has got to eat, but there's got to be a better place then right out in public. The kid gets distracted by all the noise, turns his head, milk squirts out and nails a taxi driver in the eye, he crashes into a pole and seventeen cars crash into him. The end result is a headache for travelers.

I nursed both of my girls in public and no one knew. If one is discreet - and it is possible, even in public, who cares. Even if a little breast shows, no big deal. Whipping it out for 4 year old John(ette) is a weeeeeee bit much.

    You make some valid points.
When I finally have kids I do plan to be discreet in public for reasons of not outraging folks and basic courtesy, but also to shield my child from harsh light to protect their eyes.
If they're anything like Husband and myself they'll have great nightvision, and that means sensitivity to light.
Even if not, developing eyes should be protected somewhat I feel, and a dark, cozy coverup drape is perfect to block/muffle random noises and I suspect allow my child to relax better.
Maybe I'm way off, doesn't really matter, in the end public and child will be happy and I won't have to tolerate being ogled.

The modern thing is 'in-your-face' type sensationalism, I guess.
It'll pass, as soon as the media finds a new chew-toy to annoy us all with. :-D

A movement that was quietly trying to reasonably expand the ability of women to legally and safely feed their infants got picked up by the media and blown up so that crazy radicals who are more scandalous are now the face of breastfeeding so that it's both discredited and sells better.

its okay just as long as they have a blanket or something on tv. i dont think they should have their breasts hanging out where all should see but i think its okay just as long as its covered in a decent manner.

It is to call attention to let people know that there is no reason to be ashamed to do what is best for their children. It is empowering. If you do not like it do not look.

I don't think they should be ashamed, but exposing children to media and pasting them on time magazine and having a camera crew and lights following them around is not good for them. People blasted Kate Goselin for making money off her kids exposure to media , how is this any different?

Exposing to children to it. So it is ok to children boobs are something to be ashamed of not look that is where babies eat from? I mean that is their purpose. I would never shelter my daughter from that. I would feel like I was doing her a disservice. Breast are for feeding.

Ummm I meant the exposure of the children who are being followed by lights and camera crews and garnering massive media attention. I wasn't talking about exposing a child to the breast. I am talking about women who are cashing in on shocking the public with their children. Especially the ones that are doing it with older children as old as 4. The chance for that child to be ridiculed later is very high.
