I once worked in the basement of a broken down warehouse with a bunch of Bosnian women where I wrapped bulk junk mail with string for 8 hours per day. It was a month of my life that I would never see again. So horrible.
........... working part time security assistant foot patrol on 3rd shift, at a local college where I used to live, minimal pay, even in frigid cold blizzard conditions, probably the worst employment I ever worked.......... I will say, in the other 3 careers that provided more humane working hours, and conditions, reflecting back it makes me realize how some employers just use people, and really don't appreciate what You do, that 3rd shift position I finally resigned from, needless to say, glad I'm fully retired now.........
I spent 3 years in a production line of a textile factory doing chest darts for woman dresses and blouses , 5 hours every morning when studying to become a fashion designer.
10 years later, my work is to travel around the world to control that other people make their monotonous work in a sewing machine the right way :)
I, and my co-workers, spent one year gathering requirements, designing, developing, and implementing a major payroll, personnel, benefits computer system for a major corporation. During the development and implementation phase we spent upwards of 60 to 70 hours a week for the last three months prior to implementation.
We implemented the system over the Christmas holiday and spent 48 hours straight working to get it right. It was the most difficult upgrade to any system I had ever worked on.
One of my favorite jobs ever at a summer camp in the Santa Cruz mountains! I was only 13 or so. Awesome! Me hand my best buddy had our own apartment above the kitchen and it's no joke that it never ends! LOL But it was decent money, we learned about the workings of a huge kitchen, and we loved it!
The dishes are the only part that sucked. The money was good. My roommate and I had our own place and anything we wanted we could buy. We had so much money that I gave it away to people when they needed it.
The most monotonous and focused job I ever had was going through lists of printouts of GTE phone service accounts, looking for errors. I would do this for eight hours at a time. It was horrible.
Good for him I hope he gets accepted into a neuro program. I have done lots of craniotomies as well as broken spines, since I do trauma OR. Craniotomy for cerebral anyuerisms, can be pretty monotonous, lots of microscope work...
I don't know about focused, but the most monotonous job I had was when I did work experience at the dentist. Most mornings spent rolling up cotton balls inside pieces of gauze to use for tooth extractions. Then sterilising equipment. Then sealing 100-200 appointment reminders in envelopes and mailing them.
At least we had the radio on.
Me too I did that when I was in culinary at my school on my teens years, They did had a potatoes machine, but they told me if I want to be a cook, I need to learn how to peal potatoes... LOL, First day!!! I did it for the whole school year, but second year I used the machine, I hate pealing potatoes, but I still do it.
