I figure that there is some type of gun in the house. Make sure everyone is safe and not in the line of fire, and BLAST that snake to death. Better yet, corner it, capture it, stab it, put some seasoning and flour, and FRY that sucker up in the frying pan! :) Taste GREAT! A little greasy, but...
The two that concern me are the Copper Heads and the Moccasins (coming out of the creek on my Northern property line). Copper heads don't normally bother me, and will not get aggressive unless disturbed. On the other hand, Moccasins will go after you.
I carry a shot gun when I hike by the creek, and over the years we have thinned out the Moccasin population quite a bit. What I would really like to do though, and I have been wanting to do for quit a while, is let around a half dozen King Snakes out in my woods. They are non aggressive towards Humans, but are the natural enemy of both Moccasins and Copper Heads, and will kill them.
They tend to live in dens together, so it is better to relocate them one by one.
Killing one, or two, or three will not get rid of the problem.
There are people who will remove them and relocated them, just ask around.
But indeed be careful as they are poisonous, and keep children clear of the area.
