I don't know the answer to this question as I've not been to a lot of different museums but I'd like to take a guess and say the Smithsonian should be on the list here. smithsonian institute

Sadly, I have never been to any of those, so I have no idea. It would be neat if they made a virtual tour of them for those who can't/wont travel to those locations.

There are many wonderful museums but comparing ones that specialize in one genre to another with a different focus is difficult. You can compare the Louvre to the American Museum of Modern Art but not to the American Museum of Natural History.

If forced to pick one it would have to be the Smithsonian museum. The Smithsonian is a collection of individual museums covering a vast collection. They have everything from whale skeletons to Revolutionary War material to Dorothy's red slippers from the Wizard of Oz.

I like to visit smaller, local, museums. Every town of any size has one and they are often fascinating. As an example, the museum in Oklahoma city has a tremendous collection of plains Indian material.

There is a museum in Rigby, Idaho, with material from Philo Farnsworth (the inventor of TV) material. As a former techie that was fascinating. If you go to Yellowstone its worth the detour en-route.

Karlsruhe, Germany has a wonderful museum of Greek antiquities.

    There are a million others.

All museums are very unique. I have been to "Metropolitan Museum of Art" a few times. The "Museum of Natural History" has so much to offer. "Museum of Modern Art" I've been to the Louvre in Paris France, saw original Mona Lisa. "Smithsonian" in Washington D.C. is fantastic! I saw original Mercury Space Capsule.

I haven't been to many, but my favorite one so far is hands down the National WWI Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. It might not look like much from the outside, but most of it is semi-underground. It has extensive exhibits and a plethora of artifacts (guns, artillery, uniforms, etc.), from the war.

You can also go up in the tower and get a nice view of the city after you're done looking around the museum.

For my actual experience the best museum I have ever seen was the Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH. I have never been to any of those listed but would love to see all of them. The Air Force Museum was almost overwhelming and I found myself exhausted after a full day. One should really take two days to see it and soak it all in. I have never seen so many fine examples of historical aircraft.

I can't really say, since the only major museums I've visited are the Smithsonian museums and other museums in DC and Baltimore. They are amazing. I'm sure the others on the list are as well.

The easiest to get around is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Louvre is the most comprehensive but it is set up by stacking up too many paintings on the wall at once and it is very difficult to get around. The Metropolitan Museum of Art

As far as Art Works, I prefer the Musee d'Orsay. But haven't been to British Museum yet. Didn't really care for the Louvre, and think the National Gallery is the best in the US.

Smithsonian's National Air and Space. Hands down.

It has the *original* Wright Flyer, the *original* Spirit of St. Louis, a Space Shuttle, A Concord, an Apollo capsule, and much much much more. And most of the stuff is the original item.

Heck, it even has the original Enterprise from Star Trek TOS.

It isn't really a very comprehensive list though and which museum of modern art are you referring to? Every country has one of those...

I've visited the Met and MoMA, but not any of the ones in Europe. What about the Uffizi galleries? They've got one hell of a collection. Or the Vatican? Or the Hermitage? Hell, what about the Getty? This list is sorely lacking.
