What hotel would you recommend in or around San Francisco CA?

Depends upon your budget; some of the ones that have been recommended are nice, but quite pricey.

When I went to San Francisco about 5 years ago, we stayed at a hotel almost directly across the street from China Town. Our room was so tiny, that we could not unpack our suitcases, as there was no furniture to put it in, nor closet to hang anything in. Would not recommend it. San Francisco, however is a fabulous place, and we wish we had more time to explore. We went to Telegraph Hill, in search of the wild parrots, and saw a small flock, we did a bus tour to Carmel down the coast, and we went on a Napa Wine tour. It was absolutely wonderful! Oh, and we did a dinner cruise to Alcatraz. Shopped at Fisherman's Wharf, and were delighted by the seals there. Would go in a heartbeat again.

I ALWAYS stay at the Fairmont on top of Nob Hill. I usually walk, but if it's too far I use the buses, BART, cabs (I love the cabs because they fly over the hills), and even the Street Cars (although they are a bit expensive).
