What does the word friendship mean to you? Can there be platonic love between friends?

I am curious about this because my wife and I both have friends of the opposite genders that believe that when you say you love someone....it automatically means that you are in love with them. I was raised to love all people, even friends. So can there be love between two people without wanting a relationship with them? Why do some people think that when a person wants to be friends, they are actually wanting more...even though there is no chance of anything happening?

Thanks everyone for your answers. It really helps to know that there are others that also feel that friendship doesn't have to lead to anything more, especially if the women or men know that you are already married.

Of course there can be love between friends my closest friend is like my sister I love her probably more then my actual family but I'm not in love with her.

You'll make friends of either gender that you love, and it's nothing sexual at all.
Friends and lovers both have to trust each other enough to hash such things out without fear of humiliation or outright dissolution of the relationship-- whatever it may have been.

It's complicated because love is different for everyone. Love is difficult to define and there are different types of love. Many people say they love their friends and to some degree they probably do but it is not likely to be the same sort of love they have for a spouse or child. I feel love for my closest friends but even then I love some of them more than others. For me there are not only different types of love but essentially some types are stronger than others. Love is definitely not always sexual or romantic.

Maybe at first it's hard to conceive a platonic relationship between a male and female. But over time it becomes very natural to look at them non sexually. Especially if a bond has been developed. The Second a platonic relationship turns physical, consider that person no longer your friend. In some cases the friend ship mends. Any time I've hooked up with a female friend I've always secretly told myself "That's one less ride home from the airport, good going Joe."
