part of that depends on where the relationship happens. In some states (with parental consent) the legal age for a person to have date, have sex, or even marry can be as young as 12. and its only been in the last 100 yrs or so that any laws of this sort applied. 100 yrs ago, girl was considered an old maid if she wasn't married by the time she was 19 or 20

maybe so, but personally I think it would do some of these kids good to have responsiblity forced on them a little, where they have to go out into the big bad world and finally realize the world isn't going to hand them anything

Even though many 14 year olds consider themselves grown, they are not. Best to wait and date someone who is not 20 years old.

It's illegal! Hello!? A fourteen year old is a minor. They shouldn't be dating anyone.

Since I like your responses, I will play devil's advocate again, and propose this: How is it illegal if their relationship is asexual? How would age of consent laws apply to such a relationship?

A twenty year old shouldn't have anything to do with a fourteen year old. You're just asking for trouble and playing with fire. Why would they want to hang out anyway? Also, a twenty year old is much too mature to be hanging out with a fourteen year old. Sure. It's not a illegal if its asexual, but thinking that's the case is just wishful thinking.

Since you asked, since I am playing devils advocate, he could be hanging out with her because he loves her personality: is asexual love for another immoral, even if it's with a minor?

A 14 year old is a child and a 20 year old is an adult. That would make it illegal and the 20 year old could go to jail. Children and adults do not need to be involved in a dating relationship.

    They could, but they shouldn't.

Your question would have been better worded as such. "What do you think? SHOULD a 14 year old date a 20 year old?"

You would have gotten the real answers to your poll that way.

A 14 year old is too immature to date a 20 year old. Besides that a 20 year old has no business dating someone so young. He could be in big time trouble.

#1. 14 y.o. is under the limit for adults to date. #2 at that age in life the difference is pretty huge. There would most likely be one reason and one reason alone that a 20 yo would date a 14 yo.

For one, that's not good for some barely teen to be dating a 20 year old. I doubt they're mature enough to handle the situation. Secondly, there's no way a parent should allow that kind of thing, for all they know their kid could be manipulated into a sexual relationship and that is illegal.

The 20 year old idiot who does that should be in jail.

However, to play devils advocate, is it immoral or illegal to be in a asexual relationship with a minor of 14? Age of consent pertains to being sexually active with a minor. Is there any law to preclude it from being a relationship without sex? And what would make such a relationship wrong?

The potential is always there. Even is sex is not part of the relationship, the 20 yr old is putting themself in a position to be taken advantage of as well. They could at any time be charged with a crime of rape whether or not it happened.

Now that is a sensible and accurate response.

No, what Muskoka said in that response is highly accurate. Even in my state where the technical age of consent for females to have sex with males is 16, the parents could still call for prosecution under statuatory rape laws. In most places sex is not a required action for statuatory rape.
  • Anthony... Andy Fl... 2012/04/14 00:14:01
    Anthony Souls
Then that law is flawed and exists only to create an illegal context for people who are in asexual relationships with minors: I would even go as far as to call it an abuse of law; this is because statutory rape is sex with a minor: it can't be applied to asexual relationships as it wouldn't make sense; they should make alternate laws to forbid asexual relationships, as changing the purpose and intent of statutory rape to fit is unjust.

    Take care,
  • Anthony... Muskoka 2012/04/13 23:58:08

You can't be charged with the possibility of a crime that you might commit, and if they haven't done any criminal action, than by all means charge him: if they are following their own legal standards, it would be impossible to find him guilty if he hadn't done it unless they aren't being just; how would a legal system be just if it finds innocent people guilty of crimes all of the time who committed no crime? And if it's unjust, than why follow it to begin with?

If it's perfectly valid to date a 14 year old on moral and legal grounds, than the possibility of a crime doesn't negate that reality.

Your answer leads me to onie conclusion...you're either a pervert or you don't understand how 20 yr olds think...What, do you think a 14 and 20 yr old are going to walk in the park...Come on, get real...
  • Anthony... 7leads 2012/04/14 00:02:42
    Anthony Souls
Your conclusion is based on a false assessment based on conjecture and assumptions: How am I a pervert if I can perceive of a circumstance that would be legally valid and without sex? The probability of a 20 year old wanting sex from a 14 year old and doing it is mute, it doesn't negate the reality that there might be a 20 year old out there that would date a 14 year old on an asexual basis. and by him doing so, he wouldn't be doing anything immoral or illegal by today's standards. Furthermore, he could get the consent to marry her from her parents, and bypass any such age of consent laws: as their marriage would invalidate them.

If the 14 year old's parents approve of the relationship, than they could legally become married. Also, the age of consent pertains to a sexually active relationship, therefore, is it illegal or immoral to engage in a sexless relationship with a minor of 14? However, I believe that 14 is too young to maturely be aware of what she/he wants, and in that context it should be avoided.
