What do you do when you come to a yellow light?

especially if I know that it will be a long red light!

I slow down and stop.

Close my eyes and floor it.....

My daughter came home from school one day and said she'd learned this......

Red means STOP
Green means GO
Yellow mean WAIT, even if you're late.

After laughing, I educated her on what really happens....

I assess the situation... the traffic at the moment.. the complexity of the intersection... The timing of the light.

THEN :: If I assess I can manage to clear the intersection without endangering myself or others and do so before the light turns red.. I Accelerate.

If I assess I can not manage to clear the intersection before the light turns red, or if doing so endangers myself or others - - I stop.

If during my assessment, I note that it is a Camera Stop Light... I slam on the brakes to stop anyway because I now know it will have a shortened yellow light - and wake the guy behind up UP in the process! If he rear-ends me - I have Uninsured Motorist Insurance, if he has insurance, I have it all on stop-light -video that I stopped for a light, and he didn't.

Well, slow down. If you can creep by that's ok but if it turns red then stop

You had best check the law where you live!
Here the law clearly states that if you can stop you must!

There are a lot of other factors involved! What type traffic am I in? Bumper to bumper city traffic? STOP. Fairly deserted streets and fairly close? Go for it. Always check on coming traffic, left, right. Did it just turn yellow as I got there? Am I barreling down an open highway and come upon a crossroad with one traffic light? No traffic? Gun it!

The ones I see that are the craziest, well almost the craziest, are the ones in the lane next to me that proceed through the light AFTER I have stopped. Proving it was safe to do so.

At least they've passed you, instead of plowing into your car...

I have had people pull out from behind me to run through the light they should have stopped for. They are the real idiots!

Depends. First, I do a quick cop scan. Then, if the coast is clear and I think I can make it, I gun it. If not, I stop.

Depending on how far away from it you are, it's perfectly legal. But to answer your question, yes, I've broken some laws and not accidentally.

I bet you are one of those that slow down when the light is green and act as if it is the start of the Indy 500 when it turns yellow!

Depend on how close I am to it. If i am about 60 feet from the intersection and I will gun it. Any further back, I'm stopping.

Most yellows are set to be one second for every 10 mph of road speed.
I can't speak much for other jurisdictions but here at painted intersections the solid line is the marker that you may be too close to safely stop.
Lacking that there are the parked cars & the 15 foot no parking zone at the corner If you have 3 car lengths is should be safe to stop.

But in reality if you HAVE to gun it you were really to far away.

Usually it means my partner wants to lessen up, so I discontinue and try something else. :D

At one second per road speed they are all "dark yellow"

It depends on speed, if I am going to fast I am not going to slam on the breaks to stop if I am at a lower speed I stop.

You shouldn't be going "too fast"
