Extremist is anything extremely different from you. I like to reserve the term for armed, angry toxic sorts and theocrats.

Thanks for your comment. Armed, angry, toxic sorts usually are extreme. They don't even have to be armed, lol.

Pro genocide would certainly fall in the category of extremist.

    Thanks for your answer.

Thanks for your reply. Are there still many birthers out there? I'll admit I don't line up with the president on practically anything, but I also haven't seen any compelling arguments for the birthed point of view, either. I thought that mostly died down when President Obama released his birth certificate.

Are you kidding? Just peruse SH and you'll still see a rabid contingent that are holding on tight to their delusion.

I seriously doubt that, but thanks for the compliment. I make an occasional foray into the political realm, but I usually don't get entangled in heated discussions.

it is EXTREME When the reply to your posting ..
is a threat on your life .. (threat of violence/death)
It is extreme when all that the reply contains ..
Is FILTH .. Obscenities, porn, libel/slander .. just really a whole bunch of nastiness ..

That would certainly be extreme and uncalled for. I would hope that has never happened to you, but it sounds like you are speaking from experience.

That is pretty sad. Some people live such petty lives. I've never had an experience like that here, but have heard some others with similar complaints.

A view is at the extreme point of a pole or wing. A radial is similar. I think extremists and idealists are not bad. They are discouraged as a result of the lens of our society which is overly inclusive.

I agree that society tends to be overly inclusive. Another thing I have noticed is that often people label as extreme that which they either disagree with or that which they fear or don't understand.

It's extremist when it gets to the point that you blindly condemn other's views and instead try to "convert" them to your own.

    Thanks for your answer.

What about if someone has logical or coherent reasons to reject other's views, and respectfully tries to dialogue with them?
  • Scream Jim in SC 2012/05/07 09:34:09

If they use reason that's okay. But if they just say "no, my way's the only way and if you don't follow it you'll pay", then it's extremist.

I can see your point. However, it could also be that they just don't have enough of a grasp on what they believe that they can't really articulate it. But of course, I think it would be foolish to try to convince someone to believe what you are saying when you can't actually state a compelling reason for it. I see many people who try to "convert" others simply by spouting off a list of things without any thought or justification behind those things. That usually does more to push someone away from your point of view than to "convert" them to it.
