What do the americans think of the British?

Giacomo Skeate 2012/06/20 10:33:55
I got caught up in an argument on an online forum and some americans were insulting my country. I just want to know what the general opinion is on the British in america. BTW: I love america, most of it at least.

I don't know of any American who has anything against the British. I love British music, shows, accents, and I'd love to go there someday actually... I have quite the obsession :D This is my London shirt. Hehehe. ((:

I would hope they think well of them. I'm in the military personally and have had the opportunity to work with alot of British military personel. Mostly the Royal Engineers. They're honestly no different except in the speech which grows on you quickly and if you spend enough time in their presence you'll find yourself picking up their mannerisms. I've also had alot of British instructors. Everyone has their bigots.

I am British American... that is to say, I was born in the US, raised in England by my English Mother - then returned to the US as a teenager to live with my father.

    England for me SUCKED!

Nice place to visit - - but I never ever want to live and work there.

Way too many governmental controls, and not enough freedoms and taxation is out of this world.

I think your common wealth partners, the Candians, are also a funny bunch. Mike Myers is brilliant! I really like the Graham Norton show, too!

You don't say what the forum you witnessed was all about. The people at SH are not all American and those who are, may not be a large enough slice for a general opinion.
My take on some British is that some are snobs and snobs as in superior to all Americans, and that's not true and neither is the inverse true.

well some americans are snobs because they think they can tell people how to live

That can be true, but like I wrote, you didn't put what forum you witnessed this on, and no one has told you how to live here. I was another completely unrelated thread, and yes, a BRITISH citizen stated that I was stupid because I was an American. If that isn't snobbery, then I don't know what is.

there are stupid brits and stupid americans. Unfortunately not everyone is decent and reasonable like you and i.

No, not everyone is. This person got mad because of he felt the words argue and debate were nor related, and I did. He stated that the only dictionary that mattered was the English Oxford, while I use American Heritage among others. He went into a rant about stupid Americans and that I was stupid, and I got sick of it.

Sorry for the long anecdote, but I felt I had to explain myself.
    Thanks.

I meant that some americans consider themselves superior not because they are racist, but because their country is the n 1 superpower(at the moment), so they think they are qualified to say: Your country sucks and we could kick your ass.

I know and I hate people like that. It's nationalism at it's worst.
I don't do that, and it bugs me when anyone looks down at me or anyone simply for where we are born.

I hate it too, and whats just as annoying is that the UK is still a powerful country, long past the days of the empire. And some Americans still look down on me but the majority i encounter appreciate and admire the UK for the special relationship and for it's culture and people, just as i admire the States. Sure they both have social and economic problems, but who doesn't these days?

They shouldn't look down at your for your citezenship; that;s both wrong and illogical.
Unfortunately, there are plenty of the ugly nationalists. I can't stand them.

I love the humor, wit, different terminology and accent.

Brits give off an aura of snobbery which is probably left over from the empire days. Of course, we think we can tell the world how to live (US) so we have our own brand of snobbery.

I guess there are different Brits and different americans. I personally admire the US even though i find the people in the US who think america is the centre of everything and that it will always rule the world. Apart from that, i love the US. Geography, cities, hollywood, nice people.

Dead on Glacomo! I find the same thing with people who argue America right or wrong and I guess many Brits were the same in its heyday. As for Hollywood, I don't find it representative of Americans but rather attempts to make America over into its image.

I too love Britain as it is partially the home of my forefathers. While I don't know if they were kin or not there was a large ceramic maker in Cobridge from the mid 1800's to early 1900's that bore the same name as my surname. I have purchased many pieces of pottery on eBay of that brand.

One other thing, kudos to the maker of the Supportive Garment for male inguinal hernia. I develped another one on the opposite side from a previously repaired hernia and it was too late in the year to have surgery because I raise fruits and vegetables for sale. After researching the supports available I decided on one from England and have no regrets. Expensive; yes. Worth it; yes.

I agree, i'm sure when we were the n 1 superpower, there were a few of us who thought what some americans think today. Great..pottery! My sister owns a small pottery business in NYC, i'm sure she sells some of your products, i'll ask her. I'm of different descents: Argentine, German, italian(my mother's nationality), Scottish..but i'm a proud brit! I'm sorry about your hernia, i'm glad everything worked out.
