I worked in a school office for 10 years. My intitial reaction was, getting the school supplies togther. With that goes the breakdowns their child is apt to throw if the Hello Kitty Back Pack is the wrong color. silly I know. Each choice you have listed seems viable reactions and feelings. Another Newbies: Parents leaving their kids. Separation anxiety.

In our house we dreaded the new shoes drama event of the season. Nothing would ever feel right and she'd be carring on about it cutting off her blood pressure. Then she would disappear and we'd find her in women's dress shoes teetering on 8 inch heals and saying why could she not have these? Our little drama queen. all in the costuming.

need to educate them. I hate bullying too. What an opportunity for the other kids to get to know someone different. Done right kids will become oblivious to differences. How old is your son? and what kind of disabilities? I can understand your protective stance. You must love him very much.

What a wonderful child. and aww it always tears at my heart when those little guys have to go through so much. I've known a couple of people with CP but never heard of it only on one side. Wow what a challenge for a brain to have two sets of schematics to program and run. What I love is those kids are troopers when it comes to dealing with the rigeramole accompanying the challenges that get thrown at them. Your son is very lucky to have you in his life and you could ask the teacher to do a lesson on in and the kids can ask questions and touch the braces and they'll get it right away that he's just another kid but different. NBD. Good luck and give that little guy a big huggaro from me.

I'm not too concerned about drugs with my teens, they both abhor the end result & keep pretty busy in sports. Sexual behavior is a concern, or should be with parents today between risk of STDs or an unwanted pregnacy. Coupled with the rising cost of "life".....transporting to & from, supplies, dances , etc.... it's an expense as well.

not saying that your teens are included in this, but teens that are involved with sports a lot seem to be the majority of the teens doing drugs these days, between partying and trying to seem 'cool'. all the peer pressure gets to a lot of teens these days.

Can be so very true depending on the crowd they hang with on & off the field. Luckily my daughter is active with the brainiacs on campus and my son with Alpha Omega. Both have strong groups outside their sports that keep them busy and focused in a positive manner. We can only hope they will continue along this path. Seeing first hand how distructive drugs & alcohol can be is also a good deturrant.

My daughter has a friend from her HS Varsity Soccer team who received a full ride at a midwest colleg for soccer.....unfortunately, drugs, alcohol & the party scene changed her perspective on life. Now she's home after less than a year away with a new baby and the father of the child in jail. My daughter is both sad and disgusted with her friends poor life choices and the opportunity she has wasted.

A family friend has a son who was an outstanding baseball player, college material...... He too has made very poor choices and his entire family is suffering along with him both emotionally and financially.

My husband who had his run in his early teens with drugs & such has never kept his past issues from the kids. Instead has been very open about his challenges and getting over them before they became overly distructive to himself and his family.

There is no magic to protect ourselves...

There is no magic to protect ourselves or our children from the dangers of peer pressure. The best we can offer them is knowledge of the possible concequences to themselves and loved ones and instill them with confidence to set themselves apart as a role model opposed to falling victum to peer pressure and poor choices.

I worry about whether my kids are going to get an education or will further legislation by so called "educators" render it even more into the intellectual equivalent of pasty, gruel. I mean I get to see what's put forward by the State of Georgia for grade school curriculum and it's a -joke-! No wonder the teachers can't teach these kids anything: they're hamstrung by these "educators" and politicians. Let teachers teach!

THANK YOU! I'm tired of being told what to do by people who have never stepped into a classroom. I've been teaching for 22 years and it's getting worse not better. If I were young, I would never even think of going into teaching.

Sadly, considering the entire State of Georgia graduated -3- physics teachers last year - the whole STATE-, and the entire nation graduated approximately 400 when the need is for 1200....I'd say that there are a lot of young people that are taking exactly that option.

NCLB is ruining education. It's leaving more children behind than ever. I am all for accountability, but NCLB is a faulty law that is going to have horrible effects on our kids. DON'T BLAME THE TEACHERS!
I've been teaching for 22 years and education was much better before NCLB. AND, teaching was much more fun.

Oh believe me, I don't blame the teachers. I blame the people running (ruining) our country.
I work for our local school district, and see firsthand how terrible it is. I hope it's something that can be reversed soon; lest it ruin us completely.
