What are your thoughts on hitting kids?

I just got off the phone with my grandmother and she was talking about how she was raised.
She said that her grandmother used to get three tree brances and braid them together to beat her senseless. One of the times it was because she went to school in a powder blue skirt that her grandmother didnt like because of the shade of blue that it was in. She also laughed about how her grandmother would smack her face so hard that she broke her jawbone onetime and my grandmother was laughing about it like it was a big joke.
She said that the reason why kids are into gangs and drugs these days is because they never get a good "Ass whooping" from their parents. My father hit me so hard when I was a child that I had bruises up and down my arms and butt and backside and she said that he needed to discipline us even though I couldn't sit down for two weeks because of the immense pain and I was bleeding for 3 days afterwards. I was in 4th grade. She also thought it was ok when my youngest brother in 2nd grade got thrown against the wall and his face literally beat into the wall where his cheek was shattered and his face was bruised and my father broke his nose by my father.
With her children she would grab an electrical cord and would have their father beat them until they were black and blue. For example my father was the oldest and his two younger brothers were at lunch in high school and the middle son told my youngest uncle to pull the fire alarm so he did. They got suspended and my father was in one of his classes NOT even at lunch and he got beaten senseless because he wasn't "There to stop his brothers." So if he ditched class to babysit them during lunch he wouldve gotten beaten or if he stayed in class he wouldve gotten beaten.
My father also recently stepped to one of my brothers with a baseball bat and said he was going to beat his face in because my father wanted my youngest brother to get drug tested because my oldest said he was smoking pot. So he wanted my brother to who btw is Going to UC Santa Cruz and is a straight A student to get drug tested and he was mad because he gave no reason as to why my father didn't trust him so he walked out of Kaiser. Then my father came home and stepped to him with a Louisville Slugger. So he had to move to N California from Los Angeles.
Where do you draw the line?

I think in schools though, the naughtiest children should be sent to a unit that does allow corporal punishment as an incentive to be good, or you go the punishment area...
ETA: The situations you are describing in your story are not what I'd consider spanking. I draw the line with an openhanded swat on the behind, no pulling down pants, no spoons, sticks, paddles or anything else. Swift, to make a point without harming the child. Anything above that is abuse.
LOL- I love this quote.
