Although I am straight I have had anumber of gay/lesbian/bisexual friends over the years and every one of them has said that they have had the same attractions since before they ever thought of sexual activity.

I would think that conversion therapy would be more harmful psychologically than helpful.

I think it holds a level of mental abuse on them.
Telling them they're wrong and need to be fixed instead of accepting that gays/bis whoever else are people and they are who they are.

Not to mention there's substantial evidence that it doesn't work, the American Psychology Association questions both the validity and the mental health of the patient before and after conversion therapy (also considering that there's a 5% success rate and a 23% suicide rate tied to conversion therapy) and also that there have been several therapists that raped their patients in the name of making them straight.

I'm of the belief that people will believe only what the choose to believe. Conversion therapy can work if the participant is ready to believe and act against their "gay" self. My guess is that it involves a lot of rules and methods in place to avoid any and all thoughts of homosexuality throughout one's remaining life.

That's a lot of work, man.

The alternate route is complete acceptance. Interestingly, if we had complete acceptance, there would not be such a strong need to focus on one's sexuality at all. Straight people rarely create drama about how straight they are and if people will accept them. They just assume affirmation. Alternate sexuality needs to do the same. As do I.

You can't assume affirmation if there's no obvious affirmation in society. That's how you can be kicked out by your parents, get beaten up etc. because people don't want you to have that affirmation even if you are different.
If being straight was taboo you'd see the same thing happening with people who come out as gay ect. to them. It's about societal norms, and if you want to change the focus, you have to change society. Not an easy task.

it can only work if someone is not really Gay. But in this society there will be very few who take themselves for Gay by mistake: on the contrary. so this type of therapy will lead to people suppressing their own feelings, and that can be very bad

Yeah people should not be forced to do this. They should only do it if they want to.

It is absolute, total and complete nonsense.

    It is also evil.

And I'm a psychologist, if it matters.

Objective studies show that the results of conversion therapy tend to be temporary and hard on the people getting it. It's hard for it to succeed for most people.

I don't want to try to discourage you or talk the idea of it down to you. I'm sure that those who are helped by it must be really determined to succeed and must really be dedicated to it.

So, if you want more info on your own sometime, a Google of stuff like "conversion therapy success failure rate study" leads to places with info.

Interestingly, the same people who encourage conversion therapy are also the same people who consider self-help and self-acceptance methods "cult-like" with "brainwashing" mechanisms. Go figure.
