Christmas is about recognizing the birth of Christ, and about spending time with family.

Christmas is about giving...not recieving, christmas gots its name through the Christianity faith! This was the day that changed the world for were given jesus...and he was all about helping those in need!

I think its a bit of all of that. It did begin with spirituality, and it is a time to spend more hours with family and friends while the rest of the year is so busy, but most of this gets lost in the commercialism garbage that the media puts out.

Everyone has their own reason, but as far as I can see, it's the time when families get together. That's what I look forward to the most. I don't particularly care what the holiday is really about.

And Friends.... Wish we could go back to the Blue law days and make all businesses closed on Sunday again too!

Well, I picked gifts for these reasons... I'm always spending time with family anyway, so I don't need the holidays just for spending time with them, but I still do! I'm always donating to various charities and sometimes do volunteer work, so again, I don't specifically need the holidays to do those things, if you get what I'm saying. Also, I'm not religious, so you know... So it's nice to get some time of rest and relaxation, and give/receive a few gifts!

Family comes first.

Being with your loved ones, being happy and making others happy.

That's the most important thing. Spending time with family and seeing their expressions when they open their presents. I love it

I really wish I could pick one of the other, more altruistic answer, but it's just not the case. In America, in these times, it's all about presents, and not gifts of time or giving to those less fortunate, but how many prezzies were given to whom and how much they cost. It is a zero-sum game. If X gives Y a gift, then Y is obligated to give X a gift of equal or greater value.

Now I'm sure there will be those who will say that THEY don't behave that way, but I challenge them thusly: Next holiday season, do NOT give any gifts to anyone with the exception of that charitable giving which receives NOTHING in return. And DO NOT take a tax exemption for the charitable giving.

I will guarantee you that less than one in a thousand will take me up on it, and of those who do, most, if not all, won't actually carry through on it.

Such is the nature of our current culture.

My family never made Christmas a religious thing, and I thank them greatly for that. It's about family, loving and caring. Our family really comes together during this time, and it really does warm the home and the heart.

In the case of Christmas,primarily the birth of Jesus and those other things are side benefits. in the case of Chanukah, it's about celebrating a miracle that happened regarding lamp oil lasting 8 days that should have only lasted one, and again the other things are side benefits.

"Holidays" is a very broad word. Holidays in general are a time for people relax a little and be with their families and enjoy each other’s company.

If you are asking about Christmas it a hugely different purpose mostly ignored by people and who celebrate it in a secular way.

It's practically illegal to say "Christmas" these days, so people just say "holidays" so as not to offend anyone .

It's almost hilarious that the only group it is acceptable to offend are Christians.

Yes it is. And sad at the same time.and it's partly because if they raise a stink about it they're seen as hypocritical because of the do unto others thing.
