What are some tips for falling asleep?

Corinne [Ninja]™ December 27, 2008 17:37:23

I didn't sleep much last night, and have a problem with falling asleep. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on falling asleep. And please don't say take sleeping pills, those don't help.
You!

when I have trouble sleeping, I read a book (as much as I love to read I can't seem to stay awake when I do it).

Alright I have a multitude of things I do because I'm fourteen an insomniac and a really creative person. First thing I'll try is listening to three or four songs on repeat. If that doesn't work, I go get a cookie and a warm glass of milk. Keep the songs on they really are soothing. And if that doesn't work I try telling myself stories in my head. Like I'll make something up and develope a plot line in my head and that'll usually relax me enough to get to sleep. If all else fails I have my mom hit my pressure point... JK don't do that it hurts.

    I would suggest...

I have a glass of wine, my wife sometimes takes a Benadryl (doctor suggested this...weird).

Then of course, there's always the have lots of "whoopee" and then you'll fall right to sleep.

I have trouble falling asleep too but not staying asleep. I am going to try Ambien as Advil PM just isn't strong enough. Reading sometimes helps. Ambien is supposed to be great for people having trouble with Onset OF Sleep. I will let you know how it works.

    I would suggest...

    The first step is:
leave the tv on just for a little while but turn it down.
don't put alot of cover on you or blankets
    listen to soothing music
    take a nice warm bath
this is all i know if this helps then good :)

    I do this...

I convince myself that I am unable to sleep. I look at the clock periodically, and figure out how long and when I last glanced at the clock. Then I think about what it would be like to be sleepy in the morning due to lack of sleep. I start to plan my sleep deprived day ahead and
mentally make a list of all the things I could accomplish for the sleepy day ahead of me.
I try to keep a positive attitude in my sleepless state and perhaps read book, say a little prayer, get out of bed and get some water to drink. Sometimes I go down and make a hot cup of cocoa and put a shot of Gin or Whiskey in it. Many times this method of self medication helps me to sleep.Tylenol PM or Benadryl 50 mg also can put me to sleep without fail. Sometimes I get on the internet and stare at online clothes catalogs until my eyes blur shut.
So I have spent many nights awake and have endless suggestions....the best is to exercise during the day and sleep well at night. Otherwise the best and quickest method in Hot cocoa and Gin, my favorite. :-)

Whenever I have trouble sleeping, I usually go into my room with some hot cocoa and watch like a funny tv show and then, if that doesn't work, I read for a little bit to calm myself, and my cat sleeps in my bed, so I pet him and stuff and his purring calms me too and then usually I get to sleep!

I have trouble falling asleep as well. Firstly, I would recommend cutting out caffeine. That has worked wonders for me since I stopped drinking soda and switched to only water. My sleep pattern has improved greatly.

Second, you need to focus on your breathing. Take deep breaths and try to slow down your breathing little by little. Try to think of a white room, or like a blank photo...I do that to calm my thoughts down. I imagine myself sitting in the middle of a white room relaxing.

Also, try not to get frustrated. The more you think about how you're not falling asleep, the more you start to stress over it which will make it harder to go to sleep.

Thanks. That is very helpful and I am gonna try to do some of it. I usually cut off my caffeine after about 7 pm, which is pretty easy since I drink coffee mostly and usually as a morning thing.

Find a comfortable position, pillows, a cold room, solid yet soft mattress and just lie down, close your eyes, think of good times or any memory, you'll fall asleep without knowing it. I do it all the time, and when I wake up in the morning, I'd go, "Oh. I fell asleep."

I usually don't have a problem getting to sleep, but when I do, I just put on a CD that I like. I almost always fall asleep before the end of the CD. Try it before you decide that it doesn't work. If you make it to the end of the CD, it obviously doesn't work for you. For me it doesn't need to be soothing music, since I like punk rock.
