my mother divorced my dad , but she was in the throes of mental illness . My dad remarried her because he knew she was sick and had no one to care for her . He took care of her all of her life time till her death in 1983 .

Yes,

Divorced by the time I started school. They both remarried and have stayed on good terms. I love both my step dad with all my heart. He's an amazing man.

Well the last part of that is ridiculous. Lots of marriages stay together for the children. That's not abuse.
