We're most vulnerable when we're unconscious and unable to defend ourselves should the need arise, so could there be an important reason why nature or a deity would give us such an incredible weakness as a need for sleep?

Yes, if you don't sleep.......you go insane.
Your mind needs that time to sort out and dump some of the things it deals with during your concious hours, kind of a mental filter.
Without it, you start to become unable to sort out what is real and what isn't.

Your subconscious is still self aware of the environment around you while you are sleeping. It really depend's upon you if you focus in on this innate system within the human psycee. Because the human species has evolved and have developed technology which regresses part's of our Natural defence Mechanism's, The Majority of Person's have lost touch with this sensal coprehension for one'self. It is a Personal Belief in one'self to enhance this Natural sence back into your personal awareness during sleep.

Sleep allows the body to repair itself; however, when that occurs, we are most vulnerable to predators which is why you have armed guards.

Our brains recharge when we sleep. Fun fact, you would die from lack of sleep before you would die from starvation.

Anyways, there is a lot about sleep we dont really know yet.

If you don't sleep, your brain will literally get overloaded. Sleep is when your brain rests, and organizes itself. I think of it as a filing cabinet.

We don't necessarily have any predators, and most of us can only fall asleep when we feel in secure in a comfortable environment. We have many more stressors than other animals, and a more hectic lifestyle which demands more sleep.

it's quite interesting because animals seem to sleep a lot more lightly than we do. They are not so vulnerable in sleep because they wake up at the slightest sound. Perhaps our ability to deep sleep and literally be "dead to the world" is afforded to us because we are higher on the food chain: are less threatened and not deemed to be "prey".

I think our over-active minds are the reason we need more sleep, most animals are still getting by on basic instincts. We overstimulate our minds with all sorts of things, I'd love to know how much sleep the people who live in quiet, remote and distant parts of the world need. There are tribes that still live as they did thousands of years ago, I wonder if they are more in tune with nature than we are and how that connection may affect them.

You mean deeper sleep instead of more sleep? Because if you mean more sleep there are plenty of animals that sleep a lot more and longer than we do.

I would imagine that more primitive people would sleep the usual 6-8 hours a night. They might break it up tho, 4 hours at night 3-4 in the after noon.

It's a teleological problem... a fallacy. A lot of questions
    in this forum are.

Those of us who slept, tended to survive and reproduce.
Maybe, for some reason, those who couldn't sleep, if they
existed at all, died off without passing their genetic codes
    into the population.

Seems almost easier to say that "God" or "Nature" just
made us this way, until you go looking for a reason.

That we are vulnerable when we sleep because it makes us understand that we are not invincible, but it doesn't shock us so much that we are afraid of absolutely everything.

Maybe not nowadays, with modern security or precautionary measures, but ultimately if we still lived in uncivilised times we would be as vulnerable to predators as animals are to us.

Need it to process information properly, we'd go insane without it. Also our bodies work differently when we sleep, we need that rest for our bodies and minds to be efficient again.

Besides a need for sleep to survive....we sleep so time doesn't just all run together. How awful would life be if we were awake all the time and had to keep busy. I look forward to my bed at night and it gives me things to look forward to the next day. Sleep is just a well needed break.

considering that all mammals require sleep, it would stand to reason that even the enemy has to close their eyes too. sleep is the safety nature designed into us to keep us from going crazy. the flaw is in the fact that while asleep, we are paralized in sleep to keep from injuring ourselves. have you ever woke and couldn't move right away?

Our bodies need sleep >.> We need to rest and recuperate and regain our energy. It's an interesting point that maybe we should have evolved to not need sleep. I presume it wasn't killing off enough creatures. Since every species needs to sleep at some point, no species has a particular advantage.

How do you think our brains empty out all the information we've gathered through the day? Or how our subconscious speaks to us (through our dreams, in case you're unaware)? Our bodies and minds need rest and recovery.

All animals need sleep... just like all animals need to eat and drink, it is necessary for survival. Which, is somewhat ironic.
Our body and mind can only go so far, imagine you are a rechargeable battery, if you do not recharge you will stop working effectively and eventually stop being able to function at all. A good way to understand the role of sleep is to look at what would happen if we didn't sleep. Lack of sleep has serious effects on our brain's ability to function. If you've ever pulled an all-nighter, you'll be familiar with the following after-effects and that's just from one day.

Most animals sleep in multiple phases, rather than monophasically, like we do. In fact, we used to be biphasic sleepers before artificial light was created.
