Weight Loss Surgery The Answer To Teen Obesity?

imagine2020 2010/02/10 18:18:05
Yes! The study proves that teens lose more weight with surgery than exercise and dieting.
No! The risks are too great for obese teenagers to have surgery.

The FDA is considering allowing teenagers aged 14 to 17 to have gastric banding surgery. The surgery involves tying an elastic band around the stomach to decrease appetite. Currently, the procedure is only approved for adults, but doctors are considering making a change in order to help younger people struggling with obesity.

In a study of fifty obese teens, half were given the gastric banding surgery while the other half were put on a program of dieting and exercise. Over two years, those who had the surgery lost an average of 76 pounds, while the others only lost an average of 6.6 pounds -- some of these teens even gained weight during the study. Though the surgery appeared to be successful, one in three teens needed a follow-up surgery. Also, the long term effects of the gastric band are unknown.

Although currently the FDA is only considering gastric banding, a procedure that can be reversed, two other forms of surgery could be allowed in the future. These irreversible surgeries include cutting the stomach and stapling it shut or gastric bypass which re-routes the small intestines to a small stomach pouch.

Is this the solution Michelle Obama was looking for to solve childhood obesity?

Ridiculous. Parents - if you love your child and he/she/it is approaching a health problem by playing with drugs, you try to stop them, right? So if your kid looks like a friggin Weeble-Wobble, throw away the PSOne, 2, and 3 and all of their shiny digital cousins. Stop driving them 4 blocks to school, and get them (make them) try a sport or martial art or something. they may suck at it, and they may whine and squeal horribly, but the trade-off is knowing that your kid might just like it. They grow up to healthy, strong and (gasp!) physically attractive adults.

Junk food kills way more people every year than drugs do. Think about it...

    Most cases of obesity can be corrected by the gastric bypass. If you have a teen who is actually morbidly obese then by all means introduce them to this treatment. I believe that this surgery would correct problems in many areas. Body imagine, health, build self confidence, encourages workout and definitely changes one's eating habits;

Make your child stay away from soda, it ruins their teeth and has way to much sugar and crap in it. Also stay away from corn syrup, consuming that stuff is one of the worst things you can do to your body. And Sure, if their parents are considering getting them surgery, then the child probably needs it.

Get your fat ass away from video games, computers and the damn tv, I know lazy fat kids, that's all they do! That's ok when the parents let them go and then they develop type 2 diabetes and other related heath issues that being fat causes then they will open their eyes finally. Especially when the medical bills start rolling in.

Considering the body is still developing, making that drastic of change is counter productive. Some teens do not finish growing until early adulthood. If a child is 5'3" and 175 lbs which is considered obese at 13 and grows to 6'1" over the next 4 years, that 175 pounds would be considered ideal. Let's try parenting our children, instead of chopping them.

if teens get the surgery most of them will most likely will think the don't really need to eat right or exercise so I don't really think it's a good idea unless they really need it & are going to exercise & eat healthy from then on

I've known several adults who have had some sort of gastric bypass surgery and each and every one of them eventually started gaining the weight back. Ultimately, if a person is going to maintain a healthy weight, it needs to happen with healthy eating and exercise habits. Allowing teens to have a surgery only gives them a temporary fix, while at the same time putting them at the risks that go along with having any sort of surgery. Diet, exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy is the answer.... anything else is just masking the true problem.

If there is a bad way to promote quick fixes for losing weight than this is certainly it and it is not a good mindset for anyone to adopt. If you eat right and exercise it will come off, the trick is knowing about food that is the benefit.

I used to go at it alone with weight loss and then when I signed up for the gym the Professional trainers told me things I never even knew, it them became clear why I was not successful.

7 weeks later 10 kilos are gone and I go every second day to the gym so it can work if you know the right information, get the correct advice and follow it through for life.

I saw a video on a girl who chose band surgery to help her lose weight and what stunned me was that she said freely and admittedly that she "basically ate tons of junk and big meals". She should of had psychological help before the surgery was even suggested to her but she spent 15 grand and went through with it so chances are her mental issue was not even noticed.

absurd. Wow the problem lies with the parents. We all learned our eating habits from our parents. I used to get mad at my mom for not letting us eat two starches or double carbs, but thankfully she did that because I would be in this same category. WTF?!?!? is going on in this country. What are the schools doing? The menu definitely needs to be changed to something healthier. This is so sad. 14 year old with gastric banding. Wow.

Ahh... the epitome of narcissism - replying to my own comment :) Check it out though: the single best and easiest cure for obesity is to eat non-stop. Fruits, veggies, raw fish or baked meats. Stay just under full of nutritious foods, etc and you naturally lose all of your cravings. Your body won't store your calories because you always add more. Result: Clean innards, higher metabolism, good teeth, natural and sustainable weight-loss and maintenance.

AMEN.... this is friggen RIDICULOUS!!!! so basicly they are gonna teach our children that its ok to be lazy and fat cuz when it gets too bad you can just go have surgery! oh please!!! parents need to be BETTER parents and take proper care of their children. Meaning making sure they r eating healthy, and active so they have a good amount of exercise! No excuse for obesity unless it is a medical condition..... and not getting off your lazy butt to exerise is NOT a medical condition. I can not stand people who whine and complain about being over weight... if your sooooooooo unhappy about your weight then do something about it - the old fashion, non lazy way!!!!! your the reason you are fat, stop blaming everyone/everything else!!!!

the MOST RIDICULOUS thing I have EVER heard! It is not a hard solution. Eat less+ Exercise more= weight loss. Or before they get there, Eat right+ Exercise= Healthy! Unless there is something medically wrong that is making them retain weight or something, they just need to get off their big rumps, and DO SOMETHING.

That's not really no excuse. I know someone with a thyroid condition and she used to have the hardest time dieting because of it and used it as an excuse but she found something that worked for her and she has been losing weight. it isn't impossible its all about will power and you see to have won't power. Try it for a week if you dont see a change in your body or weight then keep eating yourself into an early grave. It really doesnt hurt to try.

the wrong way to tackle this. I believe it cost around $15.000.00 and it isn't a perfect fix. I know of several people who after a few years their weight is close to what it was before surgery. First they need the will, maybe a personal trainer and fridge banding.

A big message to Fast Food outlets and other diners giving out supersize 'meals' and refills as much as you want. There's only so much you need from a meal and we need to learn again that it's a lot less than what's obviously being consumed now. And move people!!! Back to basics.

I think its not right. I mean, I suffer from being overweight. But I dont think its something we need to have surgery over unless there is something extremely wrong with their health that they need it. I've considered surgery, i really have, but I dont think its something that i should change in a hospital. Its got to be something I should change naturally.

agreed. My mom had the surgery. She's lost 150lbs, and has kept it off. If you read my comment a few comments down u will kno my situation. But my family wants me to have it too. I don't want to permanently screw up my body for something I can fix myself.
