Watching TV Gives Children Larger Waistline: How Many Hours of TV Do You Watch Per Day?

A new study, featured in BioMed Central's open access journal International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, reports a child's health is jeopardized and directly related to the number of hours they spend in front of the television.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children under the age of two should not exceed more than two hours of television per day. But many parents use TV as an electronic babysitter and greatly exceed the two-hour recommended limit.

The article goes on to report "...the result could predict that those children who spend an excessive amount of time in front of the TV as a child could experience negative health outcomes in their later life due to their larger waistline and lower muscle strength as physical fitness is directly associated with future health and longevity. "

MEDICALNEWSTODAY.COM reports:
An increasing number of parents nowadays use the television as 'electronic babysitter' according to evidence. Some parents tell their children that watching too much TV will make their eyes go square, and although this is not true, does watching too much TV as a child mean they will have a larger waistline?

I just want to know how I can get some grant money to conduct this sort of survey. It should be endless, since they make studies of things that anyone's grandparents know.

Vegetables: Are they good for you? Is too much _____ bad for you? Is riding a bicycle healthier than playing video games and eating cookie dough ice cream? Do contact lenses improve self confidence?

Wait a year, and we'll see this exact study again, done by yet another group of geniuses.

I'm a lazy ass. It's not watching t.v. that gives us a bigger waist-line. It's sitting here, being lazy, watching it. Now, if you're up and working out or cleaning and such, you'd be good.

I mean, it all just depends on the day. when I am super busy, I don't have the time to do that. but when I have nothing planned for the day, I watch maybe two hours.

I watch sitcoms on FX when I have time. I watch Netflix when I'm doing exercises for drumming. Other than that, no TV. Computer and video games are different though lol.

But as a kid that would have been much higher, thankfully I started at a gym in my teenage years and will hopefully never have to worry about obesity :)

waistline girth is a reflection of snack foods VS fruits and vegetables that are kept readily available for fast consumption.

veggies > fruit > snacks. unfortunately parent's are still not educated enough that fruits and fruit juices = simple carbs which are just as bad as lollies when given in large amounts :( Thus they will continue to focus on the activities which promote eating rather then the core issue being what they are eating.

After spending 5 to 6 hours doing hard physical work daily. I think I deserve to relax and unwind.

Watching TV gives children a larger waistline?

I was under the impression being lazy and ONLY watching TV (while shoving their face with junk) gave them a larger waistline.

The battle for the health of these children (and the country as a whole) will not end until people stop trying to oversimplify what causes obesity.

Regardless, is this supposed to be some kind of breakthrough? Who paid BioMed Central to do another one of these studies?

I don't watch t.v. It's not just the t.v. It's the lack of involvement from adults, computers, them following the example that has been set for them, the food they are eating, etc. Things were so different when I was a kid. I didn't even have an option to sit around the house. When it was nice outside, my Mom kicked us outside!

That's stupid. Not doing exercise and eating wrong affect your weight, not the amount of time you spend in front of the TV. Everyday when I've finished my work out, homework and met up with friends, I watch at least an hour and a half, sometimes more, of TV. While I'm in front of the TV I do sit ups, crunches, stretches and interval training. For the entire hour and a half. So it isn't TV's fault your kid is fat, it's probably the parents. Believe me, Beavis and Butthead goes great with celery and push ups.
