When my older brothers all went off to school and my father just plain refused to eat it I was the happy guinnea pig for french and oriental cooking lesson suprises!

She has no sense of taste so she can't tell if what she cooks even tastes good. We give her lots of feedback and she's a pretty good cook but she's not very adventurous with it.

Oh good heavens NO.We ate out a lot so whenever she would cook it would be "food is NOT supposed to taste like this!!!" I do believe that is what inspired my love of it though So I guess I should be grateful...

Don't get me wrong...I loved my mother's cooking! I spent years trying to duplicate her meatloaf since she claimed she never measured anything. When I finally got it right, I was overjoyed.

But...my mom was Dutch and Dutch cooking is all about baking, boiling or roasting. And, if you want seasonings, "the salt and pepper are on the table". All of my Dutch relatives cooked like that.

So, subjectively, no one cooked as well as my mom and I still don't like highly seasoned food. Objectively, I've had food that could be called "cuisine" in lots of other places.

Now I feel guilty...

The best cook I know would have to be my maternal grandmother, but my mother is still excellent at cooking. My dad is actually half-decent at cooking as well.

Mom and I never quite see eye-to-eye but she was raised by a lady who learned to cook from scratch as a child. She also got some Creole/Cajun recipes from my dad's mom who 'groomed' her before she married my dad (and I'm only 30 myself so this wasn't so long ago...go figure).There are many great cooks in my family.

Sort of. Grandma was the best and Mom trained from her. Funny we went to the Reunion every year and the "Oldsters would cook away and wow. Now everyone stops at the Colonels and brings Kentucky fried. boring.

Isn't that true?

We didn't have enough family for reunions (we weren't big breeders) but I've gone to office parties and potlucks. They used to be marvelous for trying new things and I would knock myself out to make something "special". I first tasted caviar and rattlesnake at office parties. And, a creamy, cheesy, Vietnamese spinach dip served in a huge "bowl" of baked bread that I would kill to know how to make.

Now...it's all take out.
