Vogue Vows Not to Work With Models Under 16: Right Move or Big Deal Over Nothing?

Under 16 and looking to score a modeling gig at Vogue? You're out of luck. And if you look like you might have an eating disorder, you'd better keep job hunting, too. The editors of Vogue magazines around the world have agreed to "not knowingly work with models under the age of 16 or who appear to have an eating disorder," according to a Conde Nast International announcement Thursday, The Associated Press reports.

vogue

"Vogue believes that good health is beautiful. Vogue Editors around the world want the magazines to reflect their commitment to the health of the models who appear on the pages and the well-being of their readers," said Conde Nast International Chairman Jonathan Newhouse in a statement. The editors said they will ask casting directors to check IDs at photo shoots, fashion shows and ad campaigns -- and ex-model Sara Ziff thinks it's a great idea.

"Most editions of Vogue regularly hire models who are minors, so for Vogue to commit to no longer using models under the age of 16 marks an evolution in the industry," Ziff, founder of the The Model Alliance, which strives to improve the working conditions of models, told the AP. "We hope other magazines and fashion brands will follow Vogue's impressive lead." Do you agree that the moves are necessary? Or do they go too far?

Young girls are being exploited now at very young ages in pageants. It's disheartening to see them dressed and acting like not normal children for their age, but a lot older. Pedophiles of course, love it. A child should be a child, and a young person, a young person, not some object to be promoted as sexy and knowing of life.

Of course it is the right move. Children posing as adults are why women in this country have such a bad body image. Because skinny adolescent girls are wearing high fashion clothing instead of real women. If that isn't warped, than what is??? No matter how thin or pretty someone is, there is a different look as women age. In Europe they are more comfortable with women looking like women. In the US for whatever reason, we tend to gravitate to younger and younger looking girls and then expect adult women to emulate that look. That is unattainable. Maturity has a whole different look and beauty of it's own and that is what the fashion magazines should be promoting. Teen models should pose for teen magazines only. Let women embrace themselves at ever stage in their lives. This is a first step....

I think not hiring any models with eating disorders is a good idea but I don't see why it matters how old the models are. Unless it's because not many 16 year olds read Vogue and they dont want their older readers thinking its a really thin older model. I dont know.

They should up it to 18 years of age. The models are still too thin. It is not healthy to look that thin they are eating under 800 calories if that a day, eating a peach is a big deal. I used to model when I was younger for major brands, I barely ate food and most of the models back then, Studio 54 era, did cocaine to stay thin, not cool. I followed my own beat was ahead of my time, but give much credit to my Dad, who was a marine sergeant need I say more. There is nothing glamorous about the business it’s not for everyone! I was very blessed to have a wonderful family who cared and I could tell them everything.

Modelling seems a very adult occupation and even some sixteen year old girls and boys are not going to be mature enough for this industry at this age.

It's about time. I've had a long suspicion that many of the fashions were designed specifically for the androgynous appearance that is very popular with some in the gay community. Let's face it, there is a significant presence of powerful gay men that are running some of the worlds biggest design lines. Having had to work with models in my younger years, all I can say is that it is a very short and often unfulfilling career for very little compensation in most aspects. We would have to use clips to hold back clothing because the models were so disproportionately tall for their width. Nothing fit right, not even shoes. Note that cheaper stores seldom show models' feet. And there are specialties of hand and foot modeling because fashion models hands and feet are not necessarily beautiful Lauren Bacall was a model. She would never have made the cut these days as she was considered too short. Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield would have only been considered as plus size models. And we have very young girls who are trying to adhere to impossible standards of what someone has designated as beautiful. thin fashion models

We will have ultra skinny, ultra young models as long as the designers and producers are homosexuals. They really want the image of 13 year-old boys (their most desirable sexual targets) and they find models that have that look.

If you watch, many shows run by women designers have more feminine models with more realistic shapes. Too bad there aren't more of them.

Design of all kinds is agenda driven. It's almost impossible for a conservative designer no matter how good to get a job. And frankly the old boy network is amped up majorly when the good old boys sleep with each other. When I worked for a gay owned companywhere all the managers were gay, they treated me like an alien during my pregnancy. It was appalling.

It's a good thing not to advertise minor models, they never look 16, usually they look like adults.
