Optical illusions will be painted onto city streets in the United States in an effort to slow traffic. The images will appear as 3D barriers to oncoming motorists, although the road is completely flat. The fake speed bumps are being installed at 100 junctions around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as part of a campaign against aggressive driving. The virtual bumps are the latest innovative measure adopted as an alternative to traditional "sleeping policemen", which have been criticized for damaging cars, slowing down emergency vehicles, and lowering fuel economy. Yes: Virtual speed bumps are a great idea. Technology at it's best!

I think it's a good idea, maybe not the best but good. Think about it, people passing through slow down like they should yet it dosen' slow down emegency vehicles trying to get where they going. Plus, locals know where tehy are and can do whatever they like. Not a pad idea, not the altime best, but not bad...

No: Virtual speed bumps would be confusing. Bad idea.

I can only see bad things happening. Those who don't know that they're there will slow down ... those that do with keep on going. I think that this will cause more accidents.

No: Virtual speed bumps would be confusing. Bad idea.

Drive by once, and you'll know you can speed next time.

    What a waste of money.

No: Virtual speed bumps would be confusing. Bad idea.

Won't people just start to know they are fake and start to ignore them like everything else?
  • [-] jks June 24, 2008 19:24:07

No: Virtual speed bumps would be confusing. Bad idea.

Why do they have to be virtual? Put in real ones!
  • [-] Alexis June 24, 2008 04:56:52

No: Virtual speed bumps would be confusing. Bad idea.

The poor old ladies that can barely see and shouldn't be driving but still do will be soooo confused.
  • [-] 凸凹 June 23, 2008 21:05:06

Hmm, virtual speed bumps. I'm not sure what I think.

Wouldn't they end up being useless once everyone gets used to seeing them all the time? Well, to the locals anyway....

Why not, we got virtual everything else.

whats not to like about it. real speed bumps would be a problem for emergency vehicles, 3d would just be a reminder when you need one. if you still want to disregard the "reminder"...than you can pay the ticket. its simple and fairly inexpensive.
  • [-] meowomon June 23, 2008 10:18:46

Hmm, virtual speed bumps. I'm not sure what I think.

Probably a good idea, interspersed with real bumps.

Hmm, virtual speed bumps. I'm not sure what I think.

Won't people know that there are virtual speed bumps? Won't they just ignore them? They should also put in real ones that look like the virtual ones. People will just get used to the virtual bump.
  • +1 raves [-] kb dragonfli June 23, 2008 17:26:17
i like the real bumps..but emergency vehicles cant have that.
  • [-] dragonfli kb June 24, 2008 10:36:17
Yup - Emergency vehicles can't do the real ones - good point.
I think they are treating people like they are stupid and spending money in the process... lol

Traffic is already too slow in Philly! At least it's creative use of money as we all wait for th legislature to pass the budget by June 30--or else 25,000 workers go on furlough.

Only thing to come out of Philly lately was the cheesesteak.

  • +1 raves [-] RockstaR June 20, 2008 03:45:05

No: Virtual speed bumps would be confusing. Bad idea.

I think that's kind of stupid because the people that drive fast are usually used to the roads that they're on - that's why they're comfortable driving that way; and the routine motorists would figure these optical illusions out pretty quickly - the only way to slow them down and make them more careful is the traditional speed bump.

That is kinda weird... but if you knew they were virtual wouldn't you just keep going the same speed?? It seems like it would only fool a person a couple times before they became useless.

Waste of money. BIG waste of money. Philadelphia has far worse problems than speeders, why not use those tax dollars for better use, like lowering the murder rate?

BUT. Won't help the locals, 'cause they'll know where it's for real..

They've been using them on the roads in my neighbouthood for several years. Speedbumps without the lawsuits for causing damage to vehicles. And they do work.

When I see those things if I'm ever up in Philly, I'll hit the accelerator out of spite.
  • +3 raves [-] Regulus... Regulus... June 18, 2008 00:08:21
I'm glad that everyone's catching on to this being classical conditioning. An unconditioned stimulus (a real speed bump) causes an unconditioned response, (a violent *WHAM* slowing down the car) which prompts in return; a conditioned response (slowing down to avoid a *WHAM*) from a conditioned stimulus (the sight of a speed bump-like "object"-the painted tarmac.) However, the aversion to speed bump-like objects decreases when the UR does not occur. The person will gradually begin the failure to associate the CR with the CS, because the CS and the UR are no longer associated.

No: Virtual speed bumps would be confusing. Bad idea.

Once people learn what they are, they'll ignore them, and possibly ignore the real ones and mess up their car.

No: Virtual speed bumps would be confusing. Bad idea.

I foresee a lot of drivers trying to avoid them and moving into the other lane. Then, people learn they are fake and ignore them. Waste of money.

after a while u will figure out they arent real and people will just speed right over them
  • +1 raves [-] Miss Lori June 17, 2008 22:07:21

Hmm, virtual speed bumps. I'm not sure what I think.

Once people realize what they are, won't they just learn to ignore them? Or worse, someone speeding might see them at the last minute and swerve to avoid them, causing a collision? Wouldn't it also create a complacency in the mind, so that a driver ignores ALL objects on the road, even real ones? I don't think that we can artificially change the driving habits of individuals. No matter what ruse we use, and no matter how much money we spend on it, people will drive like idiots if they are idiots to begin with. The only thing that smartens them up is having to accept the consequences for their own actions.

Hmm, virtual speed bumps. I'm not sure what I think.

I think they'd need to look more like real speed bumps. Also, wouldn't people start ignoring them once they realized they weren't real speed bumps?
