Well my siblings seem fine. My mother was vegetarian for I think two and than vegan for the other two.

Interesting question. Cows don't eat meat, they produce milk. Milk provides protein. Isn't that whats provided by eating meat? Milk products are given to all babies, no matter what the mother eats, so it only ends up being a toss-up to causing birth defects. I'm sure there are many more reasons to birth defects.

I would assume they are just as healthy if not healthier than other babies. I'm sure they too take prenatal vitamins, so all should be good.

Not necessarily if the mother has proper nutrition before she gets pregnant there is no need to fear.

No. There is no reason to suspect that a baby born to a vegan woman would have any defects. Vegans can eat a very healthy diet if they choose. All women who are pregnant should be taking prenatal vitamins.

I wonder what women did before there WERE prenatal vitamins?

They had higher incidence of birth defects. Since they found out about folic acid and the role it plays in preventing birth defects, you can lower your risk for serious birth defects by 70 percent.

Yes, proper diet is key to good health, both for you and the child. But the pharmaceutical industry is doing a fine job of brainwashing people so they can make even MORE money.

Excellent sources of folate include romaine lettuce, spinach, asparagus, turnip greens, mustard greens, calf's liver, parsley, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, and lentils.

I am aware, but as I said, even a perfect diet may be deficient. Birth defects have gone down since women started taking prenatal vitamins.

Apparently it's a simple matter of eating correctly. "Excellent sources of folate include romaine lettuce, spinach, asparagus, turnip greens, mustard greens, calf's liver, parsley, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, and lentils." It'd be easy for Vegans to simply omit the calf's liver. But then the pharmaceutical industry would lose money. :p

Even none vegan women need to take prenatal vitamins. I am surprised you didn't know this. It's hard to get all the nutrients you and your baby need, even if your diet is close to perfect and you eat a broad range of foods, including meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes.

That is a good question. I know that many young women make the mistake of giving young children skim milk. Young children need fat to help form their brain. I know that many vegans avoid all animal products and truthfully I don't know that it has the kind of health benefits they claim. One of the chunkiest kiddos I know is from a devout Hindu family that is vegetarian. And one of the trimmest kids I know is the daughter of a rancher and eats meat at every meal. So who knows.
