Not making this to knock people of the US and I don't know if Ukrainians could do any better, but I see that 1 out of 5 Americans could not find their country on a map.

But the US has a unique shape and location in my opinion, They are the 3rd or 4th (depending who you are talking to) largest country on earth, it has the second largest country Canada, with the largest border in the world sitting above them,. Florida and Mexico are sticking out , It only has a border with two other nations and has two oceans on each end.

I don't know , but for me of all the countries on the earth, USA is one of the easiest to find on a map.

So what's up with that?

That sounds like our high quality public education system there, and the reason why my kids won't go to public schools.

Hmmm... Well, I can recognize my own country on the map (or a globe) and so can my kid.

I'll go you one better; I can accurately locate all 50 states on a blank map.

Smarter than a 5th grader; you damn well better believe it.

Idk, basic things like WHERE YOUR COUNTRY IS ON THE WORLD MAP, I would expect to know that by, say, age 6.

Most parents have trouble even teaching their kids to dress themselves by that age these day.

My daughter knew a lot of those kinds of facts befor she went to school, but the majority of kids rarely do

Just because so many parents apparently can't teach their kids anything...doesn't make it acceptable.

I'm not sure what your actual question is based on the answers you've provided but the last I heard Americans were some of the worst at geography in the world. I blame our education system, quite frankly.

my question was why can't anyone find the US on a map because I think its shape is unique and for me, its one of the easiest nations to find on a map because of answers I provided

Yeah I have no clue why other people are as ignorant as they appear. It has always looked like a bunny, to me, on the east coast. It's why I give kids geography toys as gifts; wooden US map puzzles with the pieces being the states with the names and capitols on them, stuffed globe, children's atlases... Just don't want the next generations to be as ignorant as the world believes of us.

Some people I wonder about. I can find the US on a globe or world map, no problem. I can find the state I live in as well as the state I grew up in. I can also find many, but admittedly not all of the other individual states unless their names are on the map. I did learn all of the states and their capitals when I was in school, something that subsequent generations apparently didn't spend as much time with. Ukraine? I'm not sure whether or not I could find it on a map, but I have been there and it is quite a beautiful country.

I don't know how any American can look at a map and be unable to find the US. You're absolutely right--it has a unique shape. Then again, I'm just really good at geography so I would. lol

Citizens of the US are notorious for not knowing geography. The US on the map is unique because it looks like a kitty cat that too fat. Beyond finding the US on a globe or world map ask someone to find the states? Good luch with that!

I think it is our lax (and unreasonably expensive) public education that is at fault.

When I was in Junior High School (7th, 8th, and 9th grades), I could draw the United States with all its States from memory.

BTW, Mexico is not a part of the United States.

98% of all non-resources statistics are made up.

94% of young Americans can find their own country on a blank map.

    http://www.nationalgeographic...

92% can find Canada, 88% can find Mexico.

Source? Mine shows 92% of young Americans know where Canada is. Unless half of them "forget" (LOL) about the country that borders half their country?
