Urban Outfitter’s T-Shirts Glorify Teen Drinking: Funny or Irresponsible?

Urban Outfitters is making headlines again for selling controversial tees to teens. This time, their shirts glorify drinking, with slogans like "I Drink You're Cute" and "Misery Loves Alcohol." This would be fine... except that the store is almost always targeted to teenagers, who are still unable to drink. Are people overreacting? Or is Urban Outfitters being irresponsible by selling them?

SHINE.YAHOO.COM reports:
The clothing chain Urban Outfitters is promoting a controversial new line of t-shirts with slogans such as "I Vote For Vodka" and "USA Drinking Team." A version modeled by a young woman, who appears to be a teen, is emblazoned with blurred letters reading, "I Drink You're Cute." Sadly, what's apparently meant to be a joke isn't far from the truth: alcohol use is associated with increased rates of sexual activity for teens as well as decreased condom use.
joke truth alcohol increased rates sexual activity teens decreased condom

Trust me, they are peer pressured as it is. T-shirts already exist, and teens do wear them, so the peer-pressure from clothing exists already as well. As for the advertisement... pressure from the media is all over television. :P

This is especially irresponsible considering the recent poll that showed that a large percentage of teenagers are getting drunk at school. Any parent who allows their child to wear one of these shirts should have their head examined!

Honestly, what I find funny is this statement, "A version modeled by a young woman, who appears to be a teen." Appears to be a teen? I know plenty of 20 something year olds that look very similar to the girls modeling in the shirts. Just because you "look" young doesn't mean you are young. Could they have done a better job of portraying that? definitely. But don't get all upset and be like "omg look at those teens wearing that shirt" because, newsflash, not all women are the age you want them to be to fit your standards of what you perceive as a "teenager." Ever heard of never judge a book by it's cover? Thanks.

Though I can't see all of her face, judging by what I CAN see I'd say this girl looks older than I look; I'm almost 25 but people think I am still in highschool! However, I don't think the model's appearance is really the issue. It's the fact that Urban Outfitters' secondary demographic are people under the age of 18.

Its a free country, wouldn't stop anyone from wearing what they want. Its just a shirt, but the conduct it encourages? Well, some mistakes last a lifetime.

That's just stupid, but it's there money, if their parents let them buy it, there isn't anything you can do about it. I hope they all wear them to school so that they can be told to go change.

Alcohol is probably the worst drug on the planet. I'd rather see this and know they're just eating a twinkie or something instead of having unsafe sex, out driving, killing themselves or others, or something equally stupid.

Nothing wrong with drinking as long as you know how to pace yourself and are responsible about it. Personally, I wouldn't buy them because I don't like clothes with writing on them.

Teens are going to drink anyway i started at 16 most people i know start at 14/15 its really easy to get drink here as the legal age is 18 and most of us have friends that age or older to get it and in some pubs and off licences dont ask id if you look older i only turned 18 4 months ago and was asked id about 4 times since even tho i went clubbing and to the pub at least 3 times a week during the summer and a lot of the time i saw people i knew who are 16/17 in there its so easy like thats what needs to change

Bad Company the band had a pot leaf, worn by thousands of teens, the message reflects what is, young people drink, young people smoke, young people have sex. Its irresponsible to think otherwise. Choose your vices and reward their virtues without condemnation.

Neither, actually. I don't think drinking is funny, but NOWHERE does it say these shirts are for teens. I'm a young adult, and I know lots of 20-somethings shop at Urban Outfitters. It's up to parents not to buy these for their kids.
