Urban Outfitter’s T-Shirts Glorify Teen Drinking: Funny or Irresponsible?

Urban Outfitters is making headlines again for selling controversial tees to teens. This time, their shirts glorify drinking, with slogans like "I Drink You're Cute" and "Misery Loves Alcohol." This would be fine... except that the store is almost always targeted to teenagers, who are still unable to drink. Are people overreacting? Or is Urban Outfitters being irresponsible by selling them?

SHINE.YAHOO.COM reports:
The clothing chain Urban Outfitters is promoting a controversial new line of t-shirts with slogans such as "I Vote For Vodka" and "USA Drinking Team." A version modeled by a young woman, who appears to be a teen, is emblazoned with blurred letters reading, "I Drink You're Cute." Sadly, what's apparently meant to be a joke isn't far from the truth: alcohol use is associated with increased rates of sexual activity for teens as well as decreased condom use.

News flash: People drink regardless of what they are or are not wearing.

Speaking as a person who just last night watched a *maybe* fifteen-year-old girl get carried away in an ambulance after drinking too much, I don't think that Urban Outfitters should sell these shirts.

(By the way, don't think I'm some stuffy middle-aged woman - I'm a teenager as well.)

It's irresponsible in that Urban Outfitters shouldn't be glamorizing drinking at a young age, or perhaps drinking at all. However, that being said, in today's society and age I think majority of teens DO drink. I'm 14 myself and while I don't drink as such, I know that people around me definetley do. People my age in my school drink on a weekly basis and personally, for me, that's immoral. They have the rest of their lives to do things like that. Age limits are there for a reason. As well as the fact that many teenagers are drinking now, you have to take into account that for a lot of the wearers of the shirt it's more about acceptance than truth behind the slogan. Teenage years are a time where acceptance is something you want more than anything. The point remains that it's not going to get better if it's publicized and glamorized in ways that deem it acceptable and perhaps even "cool."

I grew up wearing all sorts of clothing, In grade school i had Joe the camel shirts. Die trying shirts form Mexico. Its not my fault parents are making their kids turn to alcoholism and drug abuse. Be better parents and look in the mirror. If you can manage to realize that having a shirt and actual doing the act is 2 different things then it should not be a problem. Ultimately every single person is responsible for there own actions and i still do not want to babysit for you. Not really a firm believer that parents are responsible for only the good things that their children do. Just another poor excuse to make parents feel like they do not have to take reasponsiblty for their actions & urban evolution is a part of life.. Gansta rap made me do it!

Bad taste. Bad message. Let us keep up the demoralization and corruption of our youth going! That is the attitude... especially if we can make more money at it... the bottom line.

But then.... when she was 13, my straight daughter was given a birthday tee shirt from a friend... "A friend with weed is a friend indeed". She never smoked but it was "cool". She wore it maybe once but it did not fit in with her healthy lifestyle and gave the thing away within weeks.

It's irresponsible if the shirt is taken literally and by the parents who buy them for their teens as is.

The times have changed. Although I don't allow it in my household, some teens best drinking buddies are their parents. Sad times....

Should be every parent's obligation to teach their children how to dress properly in public. No one ever saw my kids wearing their pants down to their knees, clearly showing the stains in their underwear. However, we are lucky and should be privilaged to buy and wear whatever we want. So...Rock On if you want to wear it as long as you're not my kid. :)

Urban outfitter is way too expensive. Teens are not the demographic they want to sell to. If your kid is wearing this you probably bought it for them.... the person who buys this for their kid is irresponsible.

Those shirts do reinforce the idea that alcohol fixes a good deal of problems in life, I don't think there's much debate over that. However, to say that these shirts drive kids to actually get drunk is simply too far-fetched. If that were the case, scores more of people would be getting drunk from being convinced to get drunk by shirts with beer brands' logos printed on them, or growing obese from being convinced to eat junk food by shirts with fast food companies' logos printed on them.

Glorifying the act of drinking? Yes, these shirts do. Driving teenagers to get drunk? No, they don't.

If I was a parent, I wouldn't be too keen on the thought that my child is drinking, or is wearing anything suggesting it either.

I don't find them funny but I don't see what's wrong with them. I'm a teen and I see it this way. Teens will drink if they want to drink. I don't see how anyone would look at one of those t-shirts and be like 'Oooh, that tops cool, lets go get drunk now' .

No, I dont think it is right. It seems to put to much empasis on alchohol as part of lifes cures. Will t-shorts alone make them an alcoholic, of course not. But it should be treated as an adult activity that requires a certain amount of resposibily not just lets get drunk my job sucked today.

Relax people...it's only a tee shirt. It's like reading bumper stickers on cars. They may be legally unable to drink but this does not mean they don't. I grew up in a big city and I can honestly tell you there is a buyer on every corner. Now I live in the country and I know young teens still get their hands on a brew or two. If they are ONLY wearing the tee shirt, consider yourself as a parent lucky. We need to be more concerned with prosecuting the adults who do the buying.
