Urban Outfitters' St. Patrick's Day Apparel: Funny or Offensive?

St. Patrick's Day is upon us, which means that Irish people -- and those who simply can't resist a good party -- will be getting their green on. St. Patrick's Day commemorates Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and celebrates Irish culture in general. But let's face it: These days, it's all about the booze. Urban Outfitters tried to get in on the fun by selling a T-shirt with the slogan, "Irish I Were Drunk" and an "Irish Yoga" hat featuring someone puking in "downward facing upchuck".

pat

Well, a group of New York politicians wasn't amused, calling on the clothing chain to stop selling the St. Patty's Day-themed items. "By selling and promoting these items, Urban Outfitters is only fueling stereotypes that many Irish-Americans, as well as the people of Ireland, work so hard to dispel," said Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens/Bronx) said in a statement obtained by Politicker.

Crowley and other members of the Ad Hoc Committee on Irish Affairs also wrote the following letter to the Urban Outfitters CEO: "We understand that such items may have been created with the intent of good humor. And, as members of the Ad Hoc Committee on Irish Affairs, we know that Irish and Irish-Americans often revel in self-deprecating and blunt humor. However, we believe these items represent a step too far, crossing a line into stereotyping and denigration."

Do you think Urban Outfitters went too far? Or is getting drunk just part of the fun on St. Patty's Day?

I pick offensive to make a point. Personally I think its funny. My fantasy football team is the Drinking Irish. Then again, I'm Irish, so its ok for me to caricature my culture right?

I say offensive because if that were a bunch of clothing using alcoholism and native americans this would be an issue.

We already have an issue with people getting pissy when native american names are used as a team logo - something positive that fans support. So I can only imagine "Indian Olympics" shirts with a stick figure with a head dress bent over puking would be.

White people may be the majority - but the Irish were a subset that were treated very poorly for quite a while here and worldwide. But we've grown up and its all good now.

I think everyone should have more of a sense of humor about their own cultures and the caricatures that exist. For Gods sake so many shows that involve either gay characters or gay "reality" characters play into stereotypes.

I say it is offensive/funny I am not Irish and I do see the humor in what they are trying to do, but I also see how Irish people would get pissed at this.

I get the joke, ha ha.
But would it be as funny if it was any other ethnic group?

Only offensive in the double standard. If we can make fun of Irish drunks on St. Patrick's Day, then we can make fun of Chinese drivers on Chinese New Year's (or Chinese drinkers... though not as well known as their Irish counterparts, the Chinese can pound baijiu shots, as I've experienced living here in Nanjing). The problem is when some people are acceptable to make fun of and told to get a sense of humor, but others are protected. The offensive part is when "Irish I Were Drunk" can be freely sold on a shirt, but Lin-sanity ice cream containing fortune cookies causes an outrage.

Oh come on. It's funny. Sure, it may be stereotyping the Irish, but they aren't really alone in that regard. It happens with every single nation.
Like how the Germans are supposed to be really anal about... well... pretty much everything.
Or how the French are supposed to be really rude to everyone.
Or that Italians are supposed to be constantly trying to screw everything that moves.
Or how the Chinese are supposed to be super geniuses when it comes to math and the hard sciences, but can't drive to save their lives.

Hell, most people think Icelanders are rude and obnoxious vikings who go around drinking, boasting, stealing all the pretty girls, robbing people blind and leaving the place in ruins when they're done. But are we offended? Not particularly, no. We've even made t-shirts that poke fun at ourselves. And why would we do that; you might ask. Well, mostly because we've seen how we act when we go on vacations abroad. We act like we own the place and we treat people like they were put on this earth specifically to serve us and to cater to our every need and desire. You know, kind of like how I've seen Americans behaving abroad. ;-)

... But also offensive, if you're feeling sensitive. I'm thinking I should have clicked 'offensive' now, but it is somewhat funny - as long as the majority of Irish people aren't offended? Confused now...

Actually I'd say both. Between the 2 items I'd take some exception with the hat. But the shirt I find funny. So far as it goes, and I'm a 1/4 Irish, St. Patrick's Day and being Irish aren't about being drunk. I'd also point out that a good Irishman can hold his liquor. Still some drinking is traditional and I think most Irish would laugh as I have at the shirt.

It is funny to a point. I mean I've heard more racist jokes than the average person and I admit to laughing at a good 90% of them (and on st Patrick's every one is a little bit Irish no?). But I mean after a while either the jokes get old or you start looking at the guy saying them and go "really?". And I mean I get there are a lot of Irish dudes out there going "who cares we laugh at them too!" but you have to remember those who take a lot of pride in their heritage and would find some of these things a little demeaning, for lack of better words. What I'm saying is keep saying the jokes at your local bar or when goofing off with friends, but keep in mind while most will read it and laugh, some will find them insulting

How about also funny and also offensive? I'm Irish, and I really don't care. The only reason why America adopted St. Patty's Day is because it gives them an excuse to drink all day. So really...I don't care. But yeah, it is a bit on the offensive side, especially to people who are a lot more Irish than I am.

The entire holiday is offensive, as it's a bunch of non-irish people playing into stereotypes. You either don't take any of it seriously or be serious about all of it. Picking and choosing is hypocritical.

Some of it’s funny, some is offensive. It all depends on the person really.
I do find it funny considering that most Irish people I know drink, and many of them went out to the bars for St. Patrick’s day. Then again, maybe I can’t say that because I don’t know any full blooded Irish people, where I live we’re all mutts, haha. Scottish, Irish, Finish, German, Croatian, ect. I am all of the above, but I’m hardly Irish at all (About 7% according to my family tree), so I don’t know if can make fun of it? Oh, to be politically correct is a complicated thing~

No you wouldn't. If you were irish, you wouldn't give a s#it. The only thing that offends an Irishman is that everybody else is so offendible these days. Crybabies, whimps and sensitive children.

Sorry, I forgot. It offends us to have our Jameson's watered.

I chose funny just because it isn't uncommon for people to poke fun about things like this. You know, it's the old "everyone is Irish on St. Patty's Day" and how it's all about the green beer and getting drunk. However, as I read below, "Superman" makes a good point. There are certainly other similar situations where people (myself included) wouldn't think it was funny. So, it is a matter of perception. There is a fine line between the freedom to poke fun (not intentionally being rude or disrespectful) and being offensive.

I can see why people find this offensive, however I think people should be a tad more mature and understand the difference between the 'stereotype' and reality.

Then again, I'm not Irish, I only have Irish friends, so it probably isn't my place to say.
