U-n-f-a-i-r? Spelling Bee Changes Rules for TV Broadcast

SodaHead Living 2010/06/05 04:01:30
How do you spell c-o-n-t-r-o-v-e-r-s-y?

Young spellers were up in arms Friday about a decision to suspend the Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinals so that there would be enough spellers left for ABC's primetime broadcast Friday night.

The result was that 10 spellers advanced to the championship broadcast, including six who didn't have to spell a word in the interrupted round, the Associated Press reported.

"I would rather have five finalists, than five who didn't deserve it," said 13-year-old Elizabeth Platz of Shelbina, Mo., one of the four spellers who had spelled a word correctly before the round was stopped. "I think it was unfair."

There were 19 spellers left at the start of the round, which was too many for prime time. But when the round turned out to be brutal — nine of the first 13 misspelled — ABC was on the verge of having too few.

It sucks for the kids that actually made it into the round. I hate it when I work really hard to get a really good grade, and a professor decides the test or project was too hard and boosts everyone's grades anyway. Fact of life - not everyone's a winner, and when you work hard to win and see everyone get your victory as a handout, it's irritating.

Maybe they could have finished the round to see what would have happened, then had a secondary, easier round.

So once again, adults in the media, take a child's competition and repackage it for public consumption. Just like Jersey Shore or the last presidential campaign.....

Sure it's unfair, and I think the thirteen year old, Elizabeth Platz, is wiser than the one's who decided this, even if she is younger. She's the smart one here.

Well now I've heard almost everything.. contests that are rigged.. lol -wasn't there a big hoopla about fixed games? They made a movie of it.. oh well .. these kids bust their hump and it all comes down to the almighty ratings with the green-backs..
Well if you are going to have to sit down,, move over and make room

When I was a kid and they use to make us do them I would make sure what ever word they gave me I got it wrong. All I wanted to do was sit the F down.

I hated them also. I think any forced competition of children is nothing but pure exploitation. Look how much pressure the children have to go threw..I know at least 3/4 of them were throwing up on a regular basis. Why in the hell would any one want that?

Reality TV screws up the National Spelling bee. I'd be pissed if I was any of the kids who participated. Six kids who don't spell a word get to go on. That is far and away WRONG. There is no reason to do that, screw the ratings.

If this is what we have to deal with for the bee to be televised, don't televise it.

These kids worked hard and NO ONE should be allowed to insult them like this!

Some things never change. It pisses me off them kids can spell better than I. I feel they should do the regular contest and let the winner win. then play the Tv game and add all the BS they want to so we will watch it like it is real.

LOL! I agree - ABC shouldn't taint the "real" spelling bee with THEIR version of "reality" - really! If the term "reality" is attached to any TV show, it is immediately suspect to me!

It's TV, they do all kinds of things and jump through many hoops to get things the way they want them, but it is unfair to do this just so showtime will be right.

I guess I am in the minority here, I love that show and watched it today, and spelled right along with them. It was fun and I learned some new words.

I agree with the children who state the others didn't deserve it, because they don't!
