Twitter obituaries: How Much Do You Trust Social Media for News?

Social media gets the news out very quickly.... but not always so accurately. I learned about Michael Jackson dying from social media, but I also first read that Mikhail Gorbachev and Robin Williams died on social media -- when in fact Gorbachev and Williams didn't die. This pic of Gorbachev could easily confuse people about his "status update."

Sometimes pranksters create fake news that gets shared and 'goes viral' before anyone fact checks. They want to overshare and get credit for passing along information more than maintaining their integrity.

Wikipedia defines social media as: "Social media includes web-based and mobile based technologies which are used to turn communication into interactive dialogue between organizations, communities, and individuals."Twitter rumours yesterday of Mikhail Gorbachev's death turned out to be greatly hashtag-erated, and so he joins the list of this year's death hoaxes.

Using Social Media as a bird dog to search out stories that need follow up.
MSM ignores far to much and pushes preferred stories forward .
When all MSM leads with fluff , Then it is certainty that something important is happening elsewhere.

If I see something, I verify it. Sometimes 'rumors of someone's death have been greatly exaggerated.'

I go to social media for fun and interesting convo. Not for truth in the news.

    Well ..
given the 'quality' (note the quotes around the word) of the msm ..
I'd have to say a bit higher than them ..
(but then again .. that's not saying much, is it?)
