Independence Day is just a week away, and political language, especially that of
the election year back and forth, is awash with patriotic memes. George
Washington, our Nation's first President, warned Americans "to guard against the
impostures of pretended patriotism."

At a campaign event on Monday, Obama provided a familiar narrative about why people are willing to pay more taxes: because they love their country.
Obama said, “[T]here are plenty of patriotic, successful Americans all across the country — I meet them every day — who’d be willing to make this contribution again because they understand there is such a thing as the common good. They understand that we’re in this thing together.”
