TSA agents at Boston's Logan airport are being investigated over claims of racial profiling of "Middle Easterners, Hispanics and blacks." According to USA Today, "the chat-down program at Boston and Detroit airports is at the fore of TSA's effort to focus security on the riskiest passengers, rather than treating all travelers the same."

TRAVEL.USATODAY.COM reports:
The TSA says government investigators are looking at complaints of racial profiling in the chat-down program at Boston's Logan airport.

I voted yes but it is a qualified one. I'm not against racial profiling depending on what population of people you are dealing with and what is the goal of the profiling. In many instances, it is simply statistical narrowing, for instance in Medicine some diseases are more prevalent in some groups of people than others. The problem for the TSA profiling, is that, they are trying to prevent acts of terrorism and profiling might help initially but it is not adequately accurate and may cause TSA agents to narrow their focus too much. Terrorists are fanatics; they are not stupid. Once profiling was the standard, they would simply change the profile of the terrorists. This would blinding side monitors as they would less likely "see it coming" if the new terrorist did not fit the profile. The cost of this error would or could be horrendous in loss of life, etc. So, whereas I'm not against profiling, I just don't want the TSA to profile on the basis of race. Profile on the actions of ones likely to commit a violent act (nervousness, pupillary changes, jumpy, etc.) and ignore the color, etc.

That is a stupid politically correct remark. Profiling is a matter of statistical likelihood and is a proper technique for determining an action. The problem with the TSA profiling is that the margin for error is too great and focusing on race is likely to cause the monitor to overlook those who don't fit the "race profile" but do fit the action and appearance profile.

So you agree with me....Its not a good idea. That is how some people get away with the things they get away with. Come on if someone want to get away with something all they need to do is give it to get a young blond with a cute face and she can slide through and blow up everyone while they are looking at the brown skin people dumb dumb everyone shouldget the same treatment unless the xray shows something out of the ordinary.

But look at the largest airport security incident. Middle eatern terrorists were at fault for that one, would you not instinctively be more scared of middle easterns than a Hispanic guy? Im not saying its right but its natural and events influence the mind.

I think behavior profiling would be a lot more accurate. It would, however, involve the TSA hiring intelligent staff who are trainable so lets just stick with harassing brown people.

and you must have a low IQ, lack of personal drive, and no desire to succeed on your own. Otherwise you'd have educated yourself like all the racist little white children who actually study and grow up to add to society and pay taxes rather than bleed it dry pleading racism rather than inferiority.

I'm not. The responses on this comment page shows that any question regarding race evokes responses that are emotional and often not rational. Race is only one part of a profile and is appropriate but it can't be so overriding that more important parts of the profile are ignored. For instance, years ago, the Atlanta child killings were thought to be the actions of a white male with possibly racist tendencies. When it turned out that the likely perpetrator was a young black male, the black community refused to accept it for a long time. It was only in retrospect when the killing cased, never to return, after this person was convicted, that the black community accepted the possibility. It turned out that there was no hate in volved at all. It was overlooked that the children went willingly with the person and the fact that most young black children would more likley leave with a person of color than a white stranger was ignored.

Racial Profiling is not ok. During my time in the military I have been all around the world, and I currently work overseas a a contractor for the military. There is no reasons to target one group over another for any reason. There are bad apples in every bunch.

By the way security in the US is a joke compaired to other countries. Go through security in the Phillipines x-ray and metal detactor to enter the airport. other of the same to get to the terminal area, and another at the gate. And that is for everyone. They also have security checks at all enterances to their Malls.

Seriously? What about the Sikh Temple shooting? That guy was white. The Colorado movie theater shooting? That guy was white. Why is it if a major shooting from an "American" is not considered terrorism?

when it's a white guy, there must be some mental issue, that way it's medical and society doesn't need to shine a light on its grotesque underbelly. It's how it always plays out. If you're not white, you're a terrorist. Now, the theater guy, I'm pretty sure he was bug nutty, but the temple shooter was clearly operating with a terrorist MO. McVeigh and Nichols.
  • Bob Eh Poli... 2012/08/17 03:31:35

well, the psychologist that he was seeing does beg to differ, as she chose to break patient-doctor confidentiality and go to authorities regarding her concerns about him and his degenerating mental state. As the case unfolds we'll hear her testimony and we can judge for ourselves.

Saying racial profiling is okay is saying "It's okay to violate people's rights as long as it's not my rights that are being violated." Sounds like another form of oppression to me. "Brown people have to go though more inconvenience to travel, but it's okay because I'm white and don't have to worry about it."

    54% Yes?

    Are you f*cking kidding me?

Racial profiling is NOT OK and those who say it is have never experienced it. it's horrible feeling, knowing you're being judged purely by the way you look, and not your character or achievements.
