Town Designates Easy Parking Spots for Women: Is It Sexist or Sweet?

The German town of Triberg is now designating parking spots for men and women. The parking spots assigned to women are much easier to maneuver compared to the men's, less convenient designated spots. The mayor of Triberg went on to state, "As a rule, men are a little better at such challenges.”

Nonetheless, several studies find that women are indeed better parkers than men. For a British study that came out this year, researchers monitored 2,500 drivers in 700 parking lots in Britain for one month. While women took longer to park, they were more likely to leave their cars in the middle of the spot. Women proved to be better at finding places and more accurate in lining up the car before backing in. Also, they were more likely to use parking strategies recommended by driving instructors.

    So, this is Germany, eh?

You know, the country that just had a court decision making circumcisim illegal?

And then there was that other big mistake Germany made about 70 years ago. We won't get into that one.

    Deutschlander dummkopfen.

I don't want things made more convenient for me because I'm a woman. I want to be held to the same expectations as any other able bodied human being.

I don't think it's either sweet or sexist. They just underestimate woman's driving skills. By making those parking spots, it's like telling women you can't drive.

That is just disgusting. And I'm surprised in Germany, it's usually a surprisingly unsexist country, but this is just a patronization against women, making men seem more superior.

Chivalry is chauvinistic in nature. It assumes that women are helpless little darlings who need to be treated speshul.
As for things like opening doors for people, that is common courtesy. If I get there first, I open the door for the person behind me. I don't care if they are male, female, hermaphrodite, or little green thing from Alpha Centauri.

Sets any true feminism/equality back every time we get special privileges. The little dig that we can't handle slightly more difficult parking doesn't help matters either.

Where are all the women Nascar drivers? Sometimes stereotypes are true. Political correctness is nothing but a vehicle to control free speech and alter reality

Most women are interested in becoming Nascar drivers, doesn't mean they can't park.

Let's have a competition. I can out park and out drive you easy dude. Yes, I wanted to be a racecar driver when I was growing up but get this, I didn't have a way to do it. Maybe that's why females aren't NASCAR drivers. That or they are discriminated against by males if they try.
  • CAPISCE DizziNY 2012/07/12 14:08:11

Or maybe it's because a driver can't talk/text on the phone and drive Nascar at the same time

Most women are not encouraged to pursue sports.
Sometimes stereotypes are indeed true. Like the stereotype that people who use the term "Feminazi" are jackwagons who are threatened by strong, capable women.

Now, I'm not saying that I'm great at parallel parking, but what a silly assumption these people make in assuming that ALL women are terrible at parallel parking. Myself, I find a spot that's wide enough that I can get in with relative ease. Like you, I assume that the exercise won't kill me either!

It's sexist to men because they have to part in a more difficult spot because they're men, and it's sexist towards women because they are assuming that we cannot drive as well as men can. All in all, a stupid thing. If you want easy parking spaces to prevent bumps in the parking lot, give everyone the easy spaces.

... but stereotypes exist for a reason. There are a lot of terrible women drivers. I'm a good driver, but often get the 'God you let the woman drive?' joke. Oh well.
