Town Designates Easy Parking Spots for Women: Is It Sexist or Sweet?

The German town of Triberg is now designating parking spots for men and women. The parking spots assigned to women are much easier to maneuver compared to the men's, less convenient designated spots. The mayor of Triberg went on to state, "As a rule, men are a little better at such challenges.”

Nonetheless, several studies find that women are indeed better parkers than men. For a British study that came out this year, researchers monitored 2,500 drivers in 700 parking lots in Britain for one month. While women took longer to park, they were more likely to leave their cars in the middle of the spot. Women proved to be better at finding places and more accurate in lining up the car before backing in. Also, they were more likely to use parking strategies recommended by driving instructors.

Because, no matter what the actual data says, women are just worse.

Yeah, tell that to all of the men who have cut me off (unintentionally), talk on the phone, swerve randomly, drink too much and drive and one who rammed his car into mine because he didn't look before backing up.

Based on the actual data the question cites, women are, in fact, better at complex parking (they take more time, but also give better results). I really don't see why I should have to be defending myself to people I technically agree with.

We always have to consider and help the fair sex. They ARE different, have different abbilities and can do many things better then we men, but this goes also the other way and that´s where we have to show consideration

But the women will like it. Women walk both sides of this issue quite well. If sexism is convenient or profitable women tend not to complain.

Put up signs "Reserved only for Danica Patrick types" and keep them the same size with a painted floral border.

At least you have a sense of humor. Thanks. This male female thing is getting out of hand. I only have about 4 real good female friends. They are quite fun to be around because we jab each other and no one gets upset. Then we talk it out. This war must stop!

It's like, "Oh yeah! We know you're female, so you must be a horrible driver! Here, let me insult you by giving you extra wide spaces, just so we can show everyone else you're different!"

I have always been a safe & conscience driver but ever since driver's education my weakness has always been "parallel parking". I am better at it but still not great. My wife and kids have never had a problem with it. If parallel parking wasn't a problem for alot of people, both men & women, then they wouldn't have just designed and made cars that now park themselves. self parking cars by ford

It is a bit sexist but also smart; since women tend to shop more it is smart to give them the prefferable parking places.
What happens if a man and woman are together?
Do they have cameras to watch who does the parking? ;} LOL

I'm always worried to park next to a woman. Although they may be better parkers, they are not as aware of their surroundings and therefore throw open their door, not caring what they hit. Just yesterday a woman tried to speed her away up infront at a lane closing. I literally had to slam on my brakes to keep from hitting the dumbass. I don't have NEAR as many problems like this with men.

If this is sexist, it is sexist towards men as well. By treating women differently and providing parking spots specifically for them, you are alienating the men.

For some very strange reason, sexism is still culturally acceptable while racism is taboo. For example, the Dr. Pepper 10 commercials with "ten manly calories" say "It's not for women!" and that's a-okay in our society. But just imagine the uproar if that same commercial said, "It's not for black people!"

Okay, which is it; do women really want to be treated equally with equal expectations or not? We already know that men and women are different in many ways (regardless of this talking head's opinion or that study). This is just another double standard permeating society - same treatment as group X...but different; get the same reward for less effort; and so it goes.

I want to be treated equally with equal expectations.
But it is nice to have a trash can in the bathroom stall for sanitary products. That's something I don't imagine that men need.

Right! Because we're different physiologically, we require different things; seperate but equal; equal pay for equal work

Okay; so in other words they believe being female is a handicap which deserves "special" treatment.

Are you kidding me? If a woman happens to mess up parking, she should get more practice. The idea of "lowering standards" and generalizing women as worse drivers is just going make women become worse drivers.

Studies show that expectations can shift how well we function to a large extent. Studies conducted at schools showed that students who were told that they had higher talents and were more intelligent (Even though they were average in both) automatically ended up scoring higher in exams and becoming more involved in school activities, while students that were told that they were average or not told that they were of higher intelligence, ended up scoring average or worse.

I've had many female friends feel anxious about driving (Even though they had never tried before) because they somehow thought they "knew" that they were going to be bad at it, and considering all the "women can't drive comments" I can understand why they'd have such a low self-esteem (Confidence is important in driving too).

I on the other hand was told that I was going to be a great driver and encouraged highly, I passed my driving exams with almost perfect scores (Something which most men and women can't do here in Finland because the standards are very high).
