Town Bans Arcade Games: Crazy?

If you're up for a little Ms. Pac-Man, you'll want to avoid Marshfield, Mass.

By a vote of 655-554, Marshfield voted not to lift a longstanding ban on coin-operated video games. Proponents of the ban insist that the town's reputation as a traditional Massachusetts seaside destination could be affected by the presumably unsavory types they imagine arcade games might bring in, even opening "the door to adult entertainment."

But opponents, like lifelong Marshfield resident George Mallet, say that the ban has been a bit of a joke since it was enacted in 1982, in the heyday of the arcade explosion.

“A lot of people don’t know it’s illegal, that we have video game prohibition,” Mallet said. “Why should I have to go to Pembroke to play Pac-Man?”

Never mind draconian, this is just out of date. Maybe next they will ban cassette players? How about beepers? Rotary Phones? Arcades aren't exactly a booming business these days

Its not really crazy at this point. Home consoles have all but killed the videogame arcades anyway, so who would notice the ban?

WHAT THE HELL? People who play video games or frequent video arcades are "unsavory types?" Well, then the large percentage of today's youth could be considered "unsavory." I didn't realize that people still go to the arcades to play coin-operated video games, because there are so many gaming systems available for your home. I'd like to know who voted how on this ban, Democrats vs. Republicans. IMO, banning coin-operated video arcades is a job-killer and reduces the tax base. I've GOT to tell my nephew, who is majoring in electrical engineering to become an inventor of video games, about this. He'll laugh his ass off. He's so "unsavory" that he was a baccalaureate student and is on the dean's list every year.

Arcades are sadly dying off and this town bans them? Also the Arcade is really obsolete when you consider the modern video game consoles people have in their HOMES. They are now a novelty that is charming and old fashioned, a reminder of a bygone era. Also the unsavory types might already exist there but currently opperate in secret. Might usher in adult entertainment? Nah, it just an excuse. If you don't want adult entertainment in your town than you can keep it out without banning arcade games.

It has been talked about that a mind is a terrible thing to waste. People get addicted to this trash and the time comes when they cannot change a flat tire, change oil in their car. Mind killers.

Ummm... Changing your oil and changing a tire have nothing to do with video games. People can't change a tire or change thier oil because they aren't taught how to do it! Why? Because Driver's Ed is taught in very few schools these days. Driver's Ed outside of schools don't teach anything but the driving laws because they expect the parents to do the rest. So the blame goes not on video games but once again it goes on our broken education system. Are video games a nusance? Sure as is anything when indulged in too much.
