To Those of You Born 1930 - 1979

…a quote of the month by Jay Leno….

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE

1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were always outside, playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers problem solvers and inventors problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

I remember riding from Michigan to Wyoming in the back window of a plymouth fury. There were 3 adults and 4 kids, but only 2 seatbelts, neither of which were used.
In school they used to pour quicksilver in your palm so you could get a good look.
Now if one drop hits the floor they evacuate the whole school and call in a hazmat team.
I used to bring my 22 to school so I could go shooting with my friends afterwards. I stored it right in my locker, the principal knew, he suggested that I keep it there. No one died, or even cared.

    Different times. Sigh.........

We grew up in a better time, that's for sure. I really miss those days. I feel for the kids growing up now so many are forced to grow up much quicker than they should have to.

I remember being interested in cars, various eras of history, wanting to be a writer, bicycling twice a day, every day of the week and as time passed, feeling very out of
time and place, now and then, in school, my father wearing a dark beard and a tin star. A lot of other things, too.

It's hard to believe how screwed up the world has become, but I do understand, those of us that made the baseball team went on to the private sector, those who suffered all the disappointment of loosing went into Government and turned it into the nanny state that it is today.

You said a mouthfull there. All the hippies protesting the war in Vietnam and spending their days on free love and drugs are now making our laws. Scary isn't it?

good analogy. It is the "anti-establishment" hippy dope smokers of the 1960's that are ruining our government today.

Circa 1963: I know times were safer then. We didn't have 60% of men addicted to internet porn. Crimes against children, minors and women were fewer and predators were prosecuted and imprisoned. We didn't have to worry about the plethora of excuse disabilities like ADD and such - we were expected to learn anyway - without drugs.

Didn't have video games to make us fat and lazy - we had to make up our own games and to be social with other children and learn to get along.

We terrorised the old ladies in the neighborhood with our antics and had to apologise on their doorstep to their face and ask forgiveness.

We played hard, worked hard because our parents expected us to grow from children we were into the adults we needed to be. Things were better then - we had less stress, fewer drugs, and fewer perverts (on our streets and within our government).

these were the days when mom was able to stay home and watch her kids grow up and dad was home every evening for dinner , Mom told dad what happened with the kids all day so you had better be good because dad would call your full name . If he did that . You knew you were in trouble. This was a time when parents were not to tired to take care of their kids and keep a watchful eye on them. Now , it takes both parents working outside the home just to make ends meat. They are to tired to care what their kids are doing for that 3 or 4 hours that they are left to fend for them selves or even longer in the summer months. I wish we could go back to those days. There would be better people in the world.

Wow...Good post, LB. I bog down when I get nostalgic. All those childhood memories, they're nothing special except they are mine. I don't want to ramble, so I'll just say the kids today are playing, as best they can, the hand they were dealt, just like we did.

That is so true, so very true. Ahh, the good ol' days. I've always thought that playing in dirt and all the things we used to do as kids helped to protect us from a lot illnesses. After all there is no better way to get your body inmmune to bacteria is to be exposed to it.

Kids today have no idea how to entertain themselves, they want to be entertained. Remember "red light-green Light" or Tag or simple simon or teacher, hop scotch, jump rope? Tons of games all played out doors. Mom was home and Dad was at work. Maybe if everyone did not need 3 tv's, 3 computers, cell phones, cable, etc. mom could still stay home.

I remember having playgrounds that had programs in the summer like teaching crafts, going swimming, playing sports, then at ours every friday night they would set a screen up over the shelter and we would all go with our blankets and pillow, popcorn Mom had made and our pop to watch a movie for the evening. We would go with our friends there were always a few adults there to keep an eye out. We had a blast.

Life was really good back then. And people were really happy. You worked hard and you loved your family and looked out for your friends. Your grandparents were the greatest thing since peanut butter and not a burden to be ignored. Your parents were your anchors. And heaven help anyone who touched your little brothers or sisters. Church was where you worshiped God and learned humility and kindness. And we were safe. I really wish we could feel safe again. I would not trade those times for anything in the world!

Kids today do nothing but whine - I'm bored, there's nothing on tv, buy me this, take me here.

When I was a kid we used to shimmy up a young tree (forget what kind) and tie a rope to the top. A group of us would pull till the top touched the ground. One kid would climb on and then we would let the rope go to see if you could hang on or not as the tree whipped back and forth.

I was born 1950. I was one of those kids who took off for the day but had to be back before sun down. Life seemed so simplier then and there was no sense of the world in turmoil. Dad went to work everyday, Mom stayed home and cooked dinner every afternoon, we took our baths at the same time every evening and went to bed promptly at 8:00 or 9:00 as we got older. We all watched the same TV shows in the living room. On Sunday's Dad pulled out the Monopoly board and we all played for hours. Dad made our radio from a Heathkit - which my bother still has to this day. A lot of what was said above is true - no one worried or was afraid to let their kids roam around as they pleased. My shortcuts were always the back alleys - never afraid to walk down a back alley all by myself at night. Yes - those were the good old days. afraid kids roam pleased shortcuts alleys afraid walk alley days
