This guy is living proof that we don't need big banks or money, for that matter. What do you think?

There are 7 billion humans on Earth today. If all tried to live like this, nearly all would be dead in less than a month.

Money helps if you want to live among other people instead of in a cave

It would still be nice to have access to about 2 to 3 million dollars.

Our society has been nursed on the fact that we need money, I think we could do just as well with a barter system. But most would disagree.

Sure money is an illusion. So is the idea of private property, ownership, and all of our social conventions. They exist and function because we're consensual members of our society. We may disagree on points within society but we all uphold the essential pillars.

Those of us who could not live like this have serious health issues, but you need to realize that our ancestors did not have the technology, hospitals and amenities that we have today. It is possible to live like this, although those willing to enforce laws upon us to live as we do right now are the ones would oppose living as Daniel does.

Money really isn't essential. There was a time when we bartered - traded work or goods for something to acquire. This was understood to be a loyal system. Governments force us to have monetary value to pay them for protection. That is what it's all about. They take away our right to protect ourselves in order to do it for us, and get paid for it.

The earth's population is what it is because of money. If we only had medicinal help without money to back it up most of us would perish. I believe if we could see things how Gene Roddenberry had foreseen our future, we would no longer need money. We would all be on an honor system without "the mark" and we would be better for it.

He's a rugged individual, yes, but I wouldn't do it because I'd be dead pretty quickly if I tried (on medicine for life). If that weren't the case, and if my children didn't need me to help with grandchildren, could I do it? With the right people, yes.

But it is true -- money is an illusion, the game piece of the 1%.

I have lived in a horse trailer and have gone with out dinner and memories of that are not real bad or real good. I am just more thankfull for what I have now. If that guy wants to live that way then that is ok as long as it is his choice. I personally would not want to do that ever again.

Money is useful primarily as a medium of exchange, but otherwise quite useless.
Money is much more convenient than hauling a big rock to town and negotiating a trade for a box of Wheaties. Then it's kinda hard to stick the Wheaties in the slot on the gas pump.

We are now "on the way" to completely digital "money", so will there be a glut of printing presses for sale? You'll have to have an iPhone to carry your "money" around. Life will be a bit different, but don't expect inflation will disappear.

Cool. Not everyone is cut out to do this sort of thing. I'm not, but I respect and admire those that are - and do.

that said, I notice that he does wear clothing [in Utah winters, HE'D BETTER, or he's dead]. he consumes. where does the bulk of what he consumes come from? the system. he's not truly free of it.

yes, I've lived in a cave and in the back of a friend's truck and under another friend's porch and on the beach. in my old age, though, I prefer a house.
even in the cave, though, I wasn't free of the system - even the basics - I walked about 1/2 mile to a filling station's bathroom, for instance.

This guy is someone that made a choice. There have been other that made similar choices some of whom get rich off the books they wrote about it. I have lived like this when working in the field and see no purpose to do so in the modern world.
