Things that make ya go ' Hmmm "...

Firefly 2012/06/03 01:32:45
LOL,

and LOL ~

As i look for a picture

to post for this question,

I ran across THIS one, and

realize I am sitting here, with

the exact same pose on my face !

Ok, but now,

for the question...

I'm watching 'Hatfields and McCoys'

on History.com, and a commercial pops on ~

It's for Ultra Beer, and it struck me,

WHY are there ads for alcohol, of ALL kinds,

yet NONE, for cigarettes or tobacco, of ANY kind ?

I used to be a smoker,

and over quit 20 years ago, and

it was the best thing I've ever done for ME...

I don't condemn those who DO,

QUITE THE CONTRARY, in fact, as

I can relate, and feel BAD, for smokers today...

They've been deprived of thier rights, it seems,

to enjoy thier 'personal choice' in public places, and

some who 'rent' can't even smoke in thier homes as well ~

And, for all supposed 'good reasons' healthwise,

but here's where I wonder about alcohol, and IT's uses...

Equally dangerous, to one and all, yet is advertised, and accepted ~

Does that make sense to you ?

It doesn't to me, at all, and ,

AGAIN, I say 'Hmmm...'

What do YOU say ?

You!

Two identical people that make the same amount of money, one smokes, the other don't. The smoker pays more taxes, but treated like a second class citizen......yes, it sucks!!

    BTW....congrats on quitting the cigs!

    And, I agree ~Why don't we ?!?

Cars and trucks are just as dangerous as guns,

in terms of potential hazards and accidental deaths, so...

hmmm... again, I say, hmmm... I'd rather see commercials for guns,

than those about viagra, condoms, ladies 'products' and, well, you git the point ~

    Yep.
Smoking (mostly - there is very little evidence so-called 'second-hand' smoke harms anyone) hurts the smoker, only.
Alcohol-Related Deaths Kill More Than AIDS, TB Or Violence, according to the World Health Organization (I know, not the most unbiased source); and the people that are killed are, more often than not, someone other than the person who consumed the alcohol...

I say you are completely right. Smokers are labeled as bad for the environment. Sadly the abuse of smokers is just another Government control on us. The Govt. continues to assert control over every aspect of our lives while trying to tell us it is a health issue. We need the to get the Govt out of our lives in every way!!!!

I can understand having smoke free environments,

but I also think there should be places open for smokers,

and NONsmokers, who don't give a rats ass about concerns

of second hand smoke, to mix, mingle, and associate, in kind ~

Business owners should have the right to decide what type of biz

they wish to have, and cater to the clients / consumers they choose...

Although there would be some, then, who would scream discrimination,

but, unrightfully so, as they therefore, have the right to shop/chill elsewhere !

Cig. ads were banned from television a long while back. . . not sure how or why. I know that Camel Joe of Camel brand cigs got lots of grief and bad image issues because many thought he came across as a bad role model or image to kids so I do not even think he is shown much on calendars and such.
  • Firefly Tamara ... 2012/06/05 21:10:54

I can see why the Camel Joe image may have been removed...

As with the 'Marlboro Man', as they both kinda portrayed the image of 'Cool',

but kinda like alcohol, and seeing adults in ads, drinking them, the fear of 'cool', or

bad role model is still in the same category, in my opinion, anyway, so I'm still wondering

why one is advertised, and the other, not, know what I mean ? Thanks for your insights Girl !

You are absolutely right...and in the HEIGHT of advertising hypocrisy...

    This is totally unacceptable,

and even though your industry literally CREATED what exists today...this is not allowed..

    BUT THIS IS...

HMMM...so smoking is BAD...and we can't risk the power of advertising nicotine on cares is to dangerous...

    again, I'll say, I agree...

I found it really rather odd,

at the time, and kinda annoying

as well that they took the 'Winston'

out of the iconic NASCAR scene and

STILL don't like it, all these years later,

Especially, as you insightfully pointed out

the advertising of beer spashings on the cars...

A truth is here in your posting ..
on my own 5th birthday ..
we were awaiting the arrival of my Grandfather ..
    only 1 hour's drive away ..
sadly .. he was MURDERED ..
by a DUI DRIVER .. just a scant month after his own 65th Birthday
sickeningly .. this one had multiple DUIs .. accidents while DUI
and my Grandfather was NOT his first victim ..

(let's also note here I'm Allergic/Asthmatic too .. Smoking substances (whether tobacco or anything else .. will cause me medical problems))

The misery .. impacts of each ..
spreads far beyond the one pursuing their 'choice' ..
innocents are harmed by each ..

(both are legal .. but both cause harm to others .. (as well as the person choosing their poisons)

it is a conundrum .. that is not easily answered ..

    A conundrum indeed,

And very well stated, Girl ~

    I am soooooo sorry, for

    the loss of your Grandfather...

    Since both 'choices' are legal,

it seems to me, the advertising

of them would be equally shared...

I wonder, did the tobacco industry

    stop advertising, perhaps, voluntarily,

and, in the name of good concience ?!?

You practically answered your question. Alcohol does not give off any smoke. People may get clumsy and worse, but there's no unpleasant smell that impregnates everything and causes a need to redecorate much sooner. Witness the success of those hooka cafes. Electronic cigarettes are also odorless. Of course if one want to be accurate, one could discuss the great misery caused by alcoholism. But we can all enjoy the libations in moderation, people think. I wonder... I had a burger and two beers at half price during happy hour, and experienced diarrhea recently. Is this a problem others are having? hooka

Smoking has been proven harmful not only to the smoker but to those around him/her.
Alcohol used in moderation is not harmful and can be beneficial for some persons as well as enjoyable. To me moderation is a glass of wine in the evening and an occasional cocktail when I'm out for the evening--not 2 six packs and a fifth of Jack!

I found it to be rather soothing at times of great distress...

Keep in mind, I don't condemn, nor condone either of these choices,

and agree with your comment, that 'moderation' is key, regarding the impact of both ~

The advertising of one vs. the other is extreme and was / is my confusion regarding them,

since they are both 'legal' and, made me stop and say 'hmmm... to the reason behind it ;0 )

So is the advertising of tobacco regulated by the government ?

Since they felt the need to step in on the public use of it,

I wonder if THEY put the smackdown on the ads

as well, or did the tobacco industry do that

themselves, perhaps, in the name of

It's the incremental encroachment on our freedoms by the government who will continue to peck at the freedoms we now enjoy.

Kind of like stealing a neighbors jumbled pile of bricks.
If I take 3/4 of those bricks all in one evening, he will notice it immediately the following day. But if I just take one brick every night, how long before he notices most of his bricks are gone?

Wake up America and count your bricks.
