It's about time! In some countries where the roads are terrible they stuff the tyres with straw instead of air.

Cool to know there's folks out there still working hard on improvements and innovations. Not cool because I'm an old fart who hates change. But I end up getting used to it, so bring on the new stuff.

this has been in the works for some time. Goodyear had a version that the tread could be changed when it wore out and would be significantly cheaper. I think Michelin and Firestone had been working on a similar concept at the time. That was 40 years ago.

That's pretty much correct. As they said, vibration is a problem and I'd think it would be due to the location of mass in relation to the axis of the wheel. Static balance wouldn't be affected as musch as the dynamic.

Pretty cool but I don't know how practical they'll be. I do know however that there are such things as airless tires out right now. They use them on skid steers. They don't look anything like the pics here but they're out there. airless skid steer tires

Look closely at the avatar pic for this post. It shows how flexible they are. They seem like they will be really great. The link I have added shows the pros and cons.

So they should be a comfortable ride. Not like riding on something that doesn't give at all. :)

Most definitely. The thing about those skid steer tires is that they give all right. You've got a lot of weight on one of those machines. Believe it or not that little machine is pushing upwards of 5000 lbs there. They're all steel. No fiberglass on one of those.

Wow! That surely is true. I remember when cars were made more that way. I have a friend who has an old Chevy truck that is made like a tank. Once he skidded on a wall going onto a highway and nothing happened to the truck! :)

Yep, I remember those days all right. I've owned several cars from the 50's and I can tell you that when you put a dent in one of those cars then you know you've really done something. The cars these days seem like they're made of aluminum cans or something. You lean against them and you can put a dent in them.

This concept actually came out in the 60s when they were running tests on the best wheels to use on the Apollo Moon Buggy..

But at the time we did not have the proper materials to apply them to NASA or civilian use..
So they used the piano wire wheel
