The Public Thinks Women Should Look More Put Together Than Men

SodaHead Infographics 2012/05/16 16:00:00
We had some pretty interesting discussion going on our poll about Emer O'Toole, a 28-year-old Dublin woman who stopped shaving her armpits 18 months ago to refine her self-image, so we thought it would be the perfect topic for this week's infographic. It's not often you see women go without shaving their armpits, but even Julia Roberts did it once. The demographic breakdown was pretty interesting, and to supplement the results of that poll we included a question about the pressure society puts on women to have better hygiene, which we broke down by gender. Wanna know how it all turned out? Let's dive.

"The public" doesn't think that; just a small majority of people on this site who voted on that particular poll do.

Please get over yourself already, SH.

those people that answered the poll represent the public, as do all of the people on this site.
thats how polls work and thats why they do them, to see what the public thinks.

Whoops didn't mean to rave that. How is the fact that sodahead does not represent the general American public wrong again?

it is not sodahead that matters, it's polls are generally bias due to blocking (like melizmatic has done to me for example).
But that does not change the fact that the majority of the public do not find hairy women attractive.

It's an OPINION. It can't be "right" or "wrong." It just IS. The reasoning supporting it can be flawed or specious, but the opinion itself is just a matter of personal perspective. Try thinking with your whole brain, not just your spinal cord (look it up).

Other people let you have opinions; why can't you let other people have theirs?

Am I missing something or does this whole poll make no sense?
Does "looking put together" simply mean shaving your underarms or is make up, hair, ironed clothes, etc.. involved?
Does the last question mean people agree with the pressure put on women or acknowledge that it exists?
Maybe I had too much wine with dinner and i should just sign off...

As for SodaHead members being "The Public"? Well said!

Nah; slanted, biased and misleading writing is totally a common staple of SH generated posts.

The implication is that the general public as a whole thinks women have to be 'more put together' than men, when in fact such a limited poll doesnt even represent a tiny portion of the country's total population, let alone the world's.

Sorry, I don't agree. Women have allowed men to get away with slacker attitudes for far too long. If we have to push the hygiene level, then so do you. I think men should be clean shaven from head to toe. And I do mean shaven on a daily basis - no stubble please.

It is a US thing really. I really don't care what other think. If I go without shaving my pits that is my business and if you don't like looking at them. Then stop looking.

There is some connection to this. Men are more visually stimulated for reproductive purposes. Women moreso by personality and pheromones. Where do the pheromones on men like to hang out? You got it right....the armpits...

should women have beards? Should men wear lipstick? Men and women differ -- let's celebrate those differences.

Most women don't naturally grow a beard but they do armpit hair, so to say that it's masculine isn't true. As for the lipstick, if men want to wear it, it doesn't bother me.

I experienced seeing this for the first time when I went to Germany in 1965. Back then European women in general did not shave their underarms or legs. I got used to the armpit foliage, but nylon stockings over leg hair.....not so much. The German girls and women I knew thought it was funny that Americans were so concerned about this cultural difference. To them it was natural. After dating a German girl for awhile, I didn't mind it at all. It was kind of a turn-on thing, something different I guess.

As far as hygiene goes, as long as the area is kept clean and deodorants applied, it really isn't unhygienic, just somewhat unsightly for our "refined" tastes. One gets the same hygienic problem if the area is shaved but not kept clean and scented. Oh, BTW, shaving is now pretty much common practice in Western Europe, too.

It's an individuals choice to do what they want, but most folks I believe would consider it to be both tacky and un-lady like. Personally I wouldn't want a gal that has armpit hair, I like a woman that shows you they want to be feminine for their man.
