The Public Thinks Women Should Look More Put Together Than Men

SodaHead Infographics 2012/05/16 16:00:00
We had some pretty interesting discussion going on our poll about Emer O'Toole, a 28-year-old Dublin woman who stopped shaving her armpits 18 months ago to refine her self-image, so we thought it would be the perfect topic for this week's infographic. It's not often you see women go without shaving their armpits, but even Julia Roberts did it once. The demographic breakdown was pretty interesting, and to supplement the results of that poll we included a question about the pressure society puts on women to have better hygiene, which we broke down by gender. Wanna know how it all turned out? Let's dive.

"The public" doesn't think that; just a small majority of people on this site who voted on that particular poll do.

It is sexist to tell a woman they have to shave when men don't, what is the difference, people should be able to do what makes them comfortable, just like some men shave their legs, some women choose not to, it's your own choice.

I only shave my armpits and legs when I wear something revealing. It's not like I had much growing there anyway, but yeah... Everybody should do what they feel comfortable with. I find men with unshaved armpits and muscle shirts just as unappealing. Oh and hell no, I do not shave "down there". I used to obsess about every single hair on my body, but damn it I'm just a human being, this is my natural self. I find it unnecessary for both men or women to shave "down there". I only sleep with one person and I know he's taking care of his hygiene. So why should I care about a little bit of hair? Do we shave our heads because of hygiene? No, we certainly don't =) Wash yourself, don't entirely look like Chewbacca, and we're good ;)

I've never had a problem not being shaved. How is it "unhygienic" anyway? Am I going to get a disease from my fuzz the same way men must?

Pits and pubes are great-- what sort of unhealthy mentality does it take to want women to look like little girls or mannequins?

God gave us hair in those areas for a reason. Granted, I shave because it does help me feel cleaner, sweat less, etc., but that's where it stops- I don't do it for societal pressures or for what my old man will say when I look like Bigfoot. If he did, I would ask why he doesn't shave his own pits, or his huevos, for that matter.
Besides, what do you think happened before shaving pits, legs, and genitalia became the norm with women in the early 1900s due to the advent of photography? Answer? Nada. If you were a guy, you either knocked boots with an unshaven lass, or you didn't get any pussy, period.

"confidence not based on her looks"? Why didn't she go without makeup or dress differently? Shaving your armpits is all about proper hygiene.

My believe is that if a man smells bad people are willing to believe the man just did a hard day of labor, if a woman caries a similar smell she's just a dirty woman. How's that for discrimination!!??The picture that comes to mind not shaving your armpits for 18 months is not a happy one but the thought behind it is a good one. Besides I do not think she wears no sleave shirts all year round!! I do believe people ( man and woman) should have body hygiene high on there list not for accaptence of appearance but for basic health issues!

While I do agree that there are just certain thing's that I do not like to see on women I.E hary legs, facial hair, etc. I would also say that society puts way to much on women and men to look a certain way or even act a certain way. Why is it that women look they way they do? Becuase we sit back and say this is how they are suppose to look and the same can be said about men. If a women doesn't want to save her armpits that's fine. Would I treat her any differtly? Nope! To me I don't like seeing arm pit hair on a man or a women but to each there own.

I think its gross to go 18 months without shaving your armpits, but it was a good reason, she wanted to build her confidence not based on looks and i think it is quite a good start. So dont make fun of her cos thats just cruel.

Sodahead does not represent the general public.

Who cares how other people grow their body hair? Don't like it? look away. Shave or don't shave- most people worthy of your attention will not give a crap.

I'm cool with all this. Personally, I hate it when women shave their chachas. I may be strange, but I'm at least not a pedophile who likes women to look like little 5-year-old girls. It doesn't bother me if they don't shave their legs or armpits, but that's just me. I have no opinion on that one way or the other as I do about the natural hairy bush. In addition, I'd rather she be a little chubby than anorexic thin or morbidly obese. My big hang-ups are bad teeth, lots of moles and skin tags, and someone who smokes.
