The Public Rejects Compensation for 'Surprise STDs' [INFOGRAPHIC]

SodaHead Infographics 2012/06/19 18:13:05
A couple of weeks ago, a woman reportedly won $900,000 in court from a guy who gave her genital herpes. According to the report, the man failed to inform her of his disease and refused to use protection. But we wanted to know if the public feels that victims of "suprise STDs" should receive compensation, or if they should still be held personally accountable for neglecting to use protection. Check out this week's infographic for details on how people responded. Let's dive!

I'm still furious about the lack of thought most people have on this issue.

While I don't disagree that the woman was foolish for not using protection, I also see that what the man did was with malice. He knowingly exposed her to an illness. Thats criminal.

It seems like most people really only care about branding the woman with any label - that of "slut" - for having sex after four dates. This without knowing what happened during those four dates and having no concept of what its like to be around the age of 50.

I see a lot of hateful and ignorant internet trolls out there who care more about attacking a woman than saying one thing about a man who would lie about an illness and infect someone with it.

If war was necessary heaven would be no different than it is now. Look at Jesus. He did not war even though humans wanted to kill him. Same should be with whoever. He is the fulfillment of the law of God body. He is the discerner of the heart too. A militarily that trusts in its arm cannot trust in Gods arm. Gods arm saves the soul. Humans with that mentality will make military armies pop like soap bubbles.

Ppoor woman. No , I stand by that remark .too many are pushing this off as nothing .STD's are serious ,and shoildn't be toosed off so easily. Yeah ,I could be really violent if pushed ,learned that in the military, and stand strong in my beliefs .I also don't give a damn what people who don't think about ramifacations of an act like this .I speak with common sense ,not emotionally ,and if you're too wimpy to tell the difference ,that's you're problem. Aspirin has been found to greatly reduce STD's when clenched tightly between the knees. Flies cause diseases. It is also a good deterrent to STD's if they remain zipped up.

My wife's mother told her to use a nickel. Watch out for that baby aspirin, though. A neighbors daughter was slipping baby aspirin into he dispenser. After the last girl was born, she opted for a ligation. Amazingly, her oldest daughter lived to have a son and is currently expecting a girl in August.

My wife would have plead justifiable homicide.

No. Absolutely they should not. People need to learn to be responsible for their own actions rather than always blaming it on someone else. If you want to be irresponsible, then you should expect to deal with the consequences.

Yeah, right! Like that's gonna happen! Why would a guy (or woman) agree to a test that costs hundreds of dollars (including the doctor's fee) just to appease a new girlfriend or boyfriend? All the guy has to say is "what you don't trust me? How can we have a relationship with no trust?". I guarantee there won't be a relationship for long if you ask that of someone before sex. Plus, the results are easy to fake with a kinko's on every block....

While your argument has some validity, she could have avoided it all by respecting herself, controlling herself and not jumping into bed with him.

Thats nice. And thats a lesson learned for her and for the broader public. BUT her stupidity isn't absolution for his act of malice. And we live in a nation where "jumping into bed" with someone isn't a criminal act.

So, as I said to someone else, she gets punished for her mistakes with and STD and he gets punished for his with a lighter wallet.

That fairly distributes punishment to both individuals who made bad judgement calls. Next time she'll wrap it up and so will he.

You know how else this could have been avoided? You know, if he actually manned up and explained to her that he had herpes and that unprotected sex could be considered a dangerous idea because the disease he has is incurable. In fact, I believe that's actually more of a problem than her sleeping with someone who she felt ready to sleep with and being uneducated enough to use protection, either for oral or penetrative sex because it's spread both ways.

    http://www.youngwomenshealth....

"After you have primary herpes (first occurrence of herpes symptoms), symptoms go away but the virus stays in your body. The virus can "flare-up" at anytime and cause an outbreak of new symptoms. During an outbreak, new sores break out in the same places. Symptoms are less severe and last for less time (a few days to a week) than those that occurred during the first occurrence of symptoms. Symptoms that occur during outbreaks can include: blisters, sores, itching and pain.

You may have some early warning signs that an outbreak is going to occur. These include tingling, burning, and itching where you had sores before. These signs could start a few hours or days before the outbreak."

I'm not a doctor (nor nurse and I don't know for sure) but I believe that's wrong... I think it's contagious at anytime when someone has it. So even in a non-flare up it can be spread. I believe the only during flare ups is a false myth... but again I don't know that for sure. Just what I believe (which could be wrong).

So you're saying, if a woman respected herself then she'd be a virgin all of her life?

So let me ask... are you a virgin? Or do you not respect yourself? Because that's what you're implying and honestly I think it's stupid.

if a person lies then they lie... who knows your BF, Husband or whatever could be lying to you about something... and you might not no...

This has been my argument all along.

Her poor judgement means she'll carry her STD for life.

His poor judgement means his wallet will be lighter.

That fairly puts the onus on both for their mistakes.

Age has little to do with it. Check the age of these participants. All actions have consequences. Whether we agree or disagree on standards of sexual conduct is also irrelavent. Protect yourself, for no one else is likely to.

Also, bare in mind she may have won a judgment. A third of it probably belongs to her lawyer. The worst part is, the judgement may be returned nolo bono. She will always have herpes.

Common sense makes those observations believable. Those over 40 are part of the bareback generation, the so-called sexual revolution. Pharmaceuticals constantly remind everyone that birth control products do not prevent STDs. In today's world, unprotected sex is like playing Russian Roulette with a semiautomatic. Even condoms do not eliminate all the risk.
