The Public Rejects Compensation for 'Surprise STDs' [INFOGRAPHIC]

SodaHead Infographics 2012/06/19 18:13:05
A couple of weeks ago, a woman reportedly won $900,000 in court from a guy who gave her genital herpes. According to the report, the man failed to inform her of his disease and refused to use protection. But we wanted to know if the public feels that victims of "suprise STDs" should receive compensation, or if they should still be held personally accountable for neglecting to use protection. Check out this week's infographic for details on how people responded. Let's dive!

I'm still furious about the lack of thought most people have on this issue.

While I don't disagree that the woman was foolish for not using protection, I also see that what the man did was with malice. He knowingly exposed her to an illness. Thats criminal.

It seems like most people really only care about branding the woman with any label - that of "slut" - for having sex after four dates. This without knowing what happened during those four dates and having no concept of what its like to be around the age of 50.

I see a lot of hateful and ignorant internet trolls out there who care more about attacking a woman than saying one thing about a man who would lie about an illness and infect someone with it.

A'men! There are so many on here that feel that simply wearing a condom would have prevented this woman from contracting Herpes, when in fact, Herpes can be passed on even if the condom is on. But then again, abstinence is the #1 sex ed topic in this country...

Yes, but that's not going to happen. Our society deems those that have the less active sex lives unworthy. I know this doesn't sound PC, but telling young people to practice abstinence is like telling black people not to listen to hiphop, Asian people not to eat rice, Germans not to drink beer, the British not to watch soccer, and Mexicans not to speak Spanish. It's unrealistic and impractical.

A simple blood test is all that is required... With the way things are today, Before I had sex with a stranger or someone I was dating I would demand the test....They could be infected with something and not know it....

It is the law that you must tell the person, if not this is what happen. It is a total disreguard for a human being and ther health. She has to live with that the rest of her life.

Pre 1960’s and the pill, and days of free love, men may have been less moral. Women were more concerned with unwanted pregnancies and men often never took it into consideration. I have known some men that brag about number of children that have fathered and do not support from a number of deferent mothers. Women today are a little more free with their favors and take pride in how young they have lost their virginity.

Primordial sexual desires (on behalf of both genders) trump rational thought; tell me I am wrong. All the aforementioned statistics are dazzling, but in the final analysis, actions lead to consequences. Now who gets to pay for treatments, pharmaceuticals and office visits until these paired genital-sets check out…hopefully they will, not the rest of us.

You're saying that yes, you would blame the woman with the std who doesn't wear protection and gives the std to her partner as well? Well as long as you believe what you believe consistently, good on you. I just hope one of these days you realize that women can be just as despicable as men.

she quote "deliberately infected her boyfriend with HIV in a revenge attack on black men who she blamed for giving her the disease.
Sarah Jane Porter, 43, who works at the Knightsbridge branch of Vidal Sassoon, set out to infect a string of men after contracting the Aids virus from a black lover.
Over a five-year period, she is thought to have had unprotected sex with with dozens of people who were unaware she was HIV positive.
A nationwide appeal to trace Porter's former lovers was issued last night as she was jailed for 32 months for deliberately infecting her ex-partner."

Thanks, good to see the kids are protecting themselves.
People have to think of all the std's that one can be responsible for including those not listed on the chart like HPV. HPV syptoms can develop up to 20 years after contact. New std's are added all the time.

There are different HPV-strains affecting different parts of the body.
The vaccine protects against the strains causing the vast majority of the sexual organ related symptoms and therefore protects against the development of cervical cancer in most cases.

Also important to mention the infection is usually temporary. The immune system can fight it on its own.

I'm not so sure about the causal relation of certain strains with other cancers. Can you give data about the prevalence of the cancers associated with HPV?

The "new stds": These are no new "stds". The H014 strain is just a mutation and Mycoplasma genitalium is also not new. It might be diagnosed more now than in earlier times, due to more advanced diagnostic methods, since it is difficult to culture outside the body.

How are these monthly exams supposed to work?

I think I gave you plenty of information to study for a few days and the difference between the two vaccines and the newer STD's.

Here's one for you to research, I could use some help with it. Lyme disease is shown to pass from mother to child in utero, if or when will it be added to the list of Std's?

The exam is for monitoring of the vagina (with a mirror) to detect changes in color, texture, or appearance of any growth etc..
  • das Michaelene 2012/06/21 22:04:08

You don't have to give me anything to study. I thought you read those "articles", know what they are saying and can explain it to us and use them as a reference.

However I can't find anything in your references about about real new "STDs".

As far as i know Lime disease is especially transmitted by ticks not sexually. "STD" or rather STI is a somewhat stupid classification anyways, because many of the diseases can also be transmitted via blood.

How many STIs can you detect with your method?
  • Michaelene das 2012/06/22 14:27:35
    Michaelene
You asked for references and I gave you 6 references to review.
I gave you two examples (there are more where they came from) which you say are now diagnosed because of new proceedures. Well, that would make them newly diagnosed. I gave you examples of HPV cases of the non sexual organs aka lungs, etc.

So you don't know about the active studies regarding the sexual transmission of LYME Disease? Look it up.

As I have already explained, the exam that my organization and I am proposing is to help women to become more comfortable with their vagina, the majority of women have never seen their own so they could not detect a change. HPV is mostly indetectable in men, so carriers can spread it without knowing. There's another surprise STD not listed in the chart above.

WHat have you provided to add to this conversation??
If anyone other than you were interested in this information, they can read it too or just ask me. I dont believe you are interested, you just want to argue for argument's sake. No thanks, I conceed, my time been wasted enough.
  • das Michaelene 2012/06/24 21:29:22

I can't help you, if you are stubborn and rude. I've taught you that there are no real new sti's. Stop scaring people with doubtful references like Men's Health. Thats all I want.

Lyme d. isn't considered a sti for the same reason a cold is not considered as an sti. Because sex is not the main way of transmission.

Both of these things are common sense and I can't give you a reference of something that doesn't exist.

I appreciate your efforts to help women, but with being angry and immature you're getting nowhere.

How did you teach me anything?
You didn't even read the article or you would have know it is based on the studies by International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research.

My sources have been cited, yours have not. Denial is all you've provided.
    Have a great day.

What is based on the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research? not that they discovered a "new std".

Ignoring my arguments, citing tabloid journalism. With that you are right here on "shallow head".
