Respect. I've seen relationships function just fine without great communication, because not all people are good at conveying feelings. I've also seen couples do just fine with the occasional peek into the other's inbox...I see that as people reassuring themselves so that suspicions don't build. My fiance is a thousand miles away so I can't indulge my unrealistic worries though >.<
But when partners in a relationship don't have respect for each other, some very nasty things can happen.

Lot's of love with no sex = no relationship.
Not a lot of love with sex = Relationship may still work.
Lot's of love with lots of sex = Ideal relationship.
Not alot of love with no sex = no relationship.
I think it's obvious what the common demoninator is.
Of course everything else will depend on the individuals but sex will always keep a relationship happier and alive.
Make all the mistakes you will but be honest so that they can be truly dealt with.
