Study Finds People Who Believe In Heaven Commit More Crimes
SEATTLE (CBS Seattle)
— Believing if you are on a “highway to hell” could impact whether or not if you commit a crime.

A study published in the scientific journal PLoS One by University of Oregon’s Azim Shariff and University of Kansas’s Mijke Rhemtulla finds that people who believe in hell are less likely to commit a crime while people who believe in heaven more likely are to get in trouble with the law.

The two professors collected data for belief in hell, heaven and God from the World and European Values Surveys that were conducted between 1981 until 2007 with 143,197 participants based in 67 countries. They compared the data to the mean standardized crime rate in those countries based on homicides, robberies, rapes, kidnappings, assaults, thefts, auto thefts, drug crimes, burglaries and human trafficking.

“[R]ates of belief in heaven and hell had significant, unique, and opposing effects on crime rates,” Shariff and Rhemtulla found in the study. “Belief in hell predicted lower crime rates … whereas belief in heaven predicted higher crime rates.”

They also found that a recent social psychological experiment found that Christian participants who believe in a forgiving God gave themselves more money for the study.

“Participants in the punishing God and both human conditions overpaid themselves less than 50 cents more than what they deserved for their anagrams, and did not statistically differ from the neutral condition, those who wrote about a forgiving God overpaid themselves significantly more-nearly two dollars,” the study found.

Shariff and Rhemtulla believe that the study raises “important questions about the potential impact of religious beliefs on global crime.”

If it was predominantly Mafia members studied maybe.

I'm sure the prisons are full of mainline Christians who robbed banks and raped women.

I've always noticed that Christians tend to be less ethical than non-believers, and I simply attributed it to the possibility that Christians believe they can be forgiven for their wrongdoings and still achieve salvation. Non-believers, on the other hand, often think that this life is all we get, and that if we are to be decent people, we must behave decently during it.

First off, I really hate it when newspapers put out information from an academic paper and not provide the title of the piece (though they did include the authors and the publication it came from), so I assume it's this one.

Second, I find this a little dubious because there's no control group. Are there "non-Christian" subjects they've studied? From what I've read, this study suits only people in Abrahamic religions, but seems to focus only on "Christian participants." Why only Christians? Why not Muslims, or Jews, or even atheists? Atheists would be the perfect control in effecting more data in this study.

makes sense. the ones who believe in heaven think all they have to do is confess on their deathbed and they go to heaven anyway. but since neither place exists its pointless. interesting study on how people think.

I think there are more who believe in heaven so yes, this would make sense. LOL It's sheer numbers, nothing about morality. At least not in the sense of believing in heaven or hell.

Since the over whelming majority of the population in prisons are christian the stats are not surprising at all.

You'll have to be careful there as the majority of people in the country are Christian as well. Whether or not religious belief causes crime rate frequency isn't fully developed. Is there a correlation? Sure. But remember that correlation does not imply causation.

In fact, before I read your comments, I was going to make a statement to that effect. After all, if one is promised they will be welcomed by 72 virgins if they behead someone or blow themselves up while killing a lot of other people, then the statement that more crimes are committed by those believing in heaven would hold true. The problem arises from the sheer fact that we are stupid enough to accept the Muslim ideology as a "religion"! Pretty sick thinking that.
